Sozaburo`s words

What do YOU think Sozaburo told Tashiro at the end of the movie?
They were fighting, then Sozaburo said something that made Tashiro off-guard...

What do YOU think he said?

reply

[Sozaburo] I ... just realised this movie makes no sense at all.
[Tashiro] *completely aghast, as he realises how true it is*

reply

Heh heh... Well, it must have been something VERY... Weird too leave Tashiro stunned like that. Poor Tashiro!...

reply

I think he said lying: I love you.

That somebody is thrown off-guard, when he hears that words from an answered love is easy to imagine. Despite what Hijikata thinks Kano and Toshi were not lovers.

reply

Quite possible.
But did he mean it, or just said it to save himself?

The ending is great, but I always imagine a more romantic ending...!
At least they died (almost) together.

reply

I thought it was clear that he said "gomen" (sorry), exactly what he said immediately before executing the money borrower early in the film.

I think it was a key to understanding his motives in setting up and executing Tashiro. Remember the codes that the two read in the beginning and Tashiro's response to the battle code.

I'll have to watch the scene again to make sure.

reply

yes, he said 'Forgive me' but i think he also said something else after but it can not be heard

In one translation file I had when I saw the movie he says "I forgive you". I cannot say this translation was right or not since I cannot understnad the last phrase by myself. However, it made sense enough for me. Anyways, it still gives some sense of mistery and imagination needed to understand the ending which I like :)

reply

I think that maybe even Sozaburo told Toshiro that he did not love him.
That's why Toshiro was so stunned.

He doesn't say "gomen." He says *beep* kure" --Forgive me. Then in the Version Released in America on DVD, his lips keep moving for a few more words sotto voce, which Hijikata and Soji cannot hear. So its not the "Forgive me," but whatever follows. It might be a profession of love, or something else. Like others have observed. Its ambiguous, and meant to be that way.

reply

" Actually, I'm a woman "

reply

"My dad was in Black Rain"

reply

Lol...

anyway, most likely it is the pledge of fidelity that all the other interested samurais were trying to get from him. Under such an oath, the lovers vow to live and die together. That would be the only thing that can stump Tashiro and make him lose his will to fight, and also make Soji pissed enough to kill Sozaburo

Bingo!

I think what Sozaburo said or something like it was "Forgive me, I do love you". Now, we already know by now that Sozaburo is an attention loving and blood thirsty kiddo, but what do his words actually mean?
I think they're either true words of deception to throw Toshiro off-guard so Sozaburo can fullfill his lust for the kill OR Toshiro is the only man he actually loved (as far as we can see, Toshiro's love for Sozaburo is different because it appeared to be unprovoked) yet that love didn't override his true self, so he's like "Forgive me, I do love you..(but I must kill you)". It can be interpreted either way I suppose. Yet one thing that gets me is that when Hijikata asks Sozaburo "why don't you cut your locks" he replies "Can I keep them for a while? I made a vow..". Now, could that vow be to Toshiro and he's keeping them because he loves him OR is he keeping them because Toshiro would suspect something if he cut them before he killed him. I'd love to believe that Sozaburo loved Toshiro, but frankly, I don't know. I guess I never will..

reply

Probably "he said forgive me... because you're going to die without making love to me though you told me you wanted to long ago". Poor Toshiro.

reply

"You didn't satsify me in bed." ;)

i thought so too. he said *beep* kure" (forgive me) and then something like "motome" (request) something something. i couldn't catch the rest.

reply

he says what sounds like "your osh te-koday", then he whispers what sounds like "tomas" and "ta-kame". i dont know what the words are, but it wasnt "gomen".

reply

"i was fakeing it all the time":D

reply

you think? thats sounds very logical.

I've started a new strand on this, I found out what he said. Go to the top of the board if you want to know.
