What?! It's true? Answer my many questions....

This was my fave disney channel movie back in the day and I just thought I'd revisit it. But, I'm reading all these posts on here and it's freaking me out.

1. So this was true? This story was true? I had no idea!!!! I always thought it was fiction.

2. And wasn't it set in present day? I mean maybe not if it's based on a true story, but I soooo thought it was supposed to be present day. Well 9 years ago when it was made. So if not present day, when?

3. Did Mahree furreal die? Sad.

4. What were they protesting? I never understand what was going on when Mahree was in that building and outside people were protesting something. In America. I guess if it wasn't set in the 2000's then that might help answer that...

I don't know, tell me!

just sayin.

1. The Stephen Biko story is true. You can search his name on google and find out more about him. There's also a real Ronald Dellums. I don't think the part about Piper and Mahree is true though.

2. No it wasn't present day. Do you remember the clothes? Bell bottoms and platforms...definitely not present day lol. Also, Stephen Biko died in 1977.

3. I don't remember Mahree ever dying?

4. Stephen Biko was killed. When Mahree goes in the building she's told that Stephen Biko killed himself when really the cops beat him to death. The protestors outside were upset and wanted something done.

Edit: This post says that There was a "Mahree" (real name Carrie). http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0213565/board/nest/112587442

I'm 17 now but I haven't watched this movie since I was probably 11. Tops. So geez no need to hurt my feelings.

But I will say this: I watched it recently (black history month, yay) and I realized that I basically missed EVERYTHING. Like I have no idea how I liked this movie so much because I didn't get it at ALL.

Like, I had no idea that Mahree was racist against her host family. That went completely over my head. I really don't know why.

Oh, and P.S. I know it's stupid, and I know you're wrong, but when I read things that are mean to me on the internet like this, I get this sudden, terrible headache, and my face heats up (kinda like blushing only not) and I feel embarrassed and ashamed to exist. I know it's dumb and I know I should get over it, but it doesn't change the fact that it happens anyway. So seriously, you should be careful about what you say.

By the way, you're an idiot. (that's my anger defense mechanism, I couldn't resist.)

just sayin.

I don't think it's OKAY for people to say mean things with no consequence. Obviously, people always will, and so we all gotta be tough, but that doesn't make it OKAY. Which is why I said that.

And I'm not an idiot. I was never an idiot. You have no *beep* idea who I am and you will never be able to tell who someone is based on what the picked up on/remember from one movie they saw 6 or 7 years ago. Ever. That is very little to go on.

just sayin.

Since someone answered most of your questions, I will answer #3.

It is rumored that Mahree Bok, real name Carrie, was murdered when she returned home.

I've heard quite a few stories like:

1) Right when she returned, the South African police interrogated and tortured her because of the Dellums. But wouldn't that mean that her father who was a policeman helped murder his daughter?

2) She could have been an activist when she returned and she was beaten to death.

Rest In Peace, Chloe Madison. I will always love you.

It kind of goes to show the prominence of the "70s Revival" in the 90s, that you actually saw the platform shoes and bellbottoms - all of which were popular in the 90s - and thought this story took place in the present.

Oh my gosh, everyone lay off the original poster, not every 11 year old is a Rhodes Scholar, sheesh.

Original poster, people are a lot more harsh on the internet because it's easier for people to hide behind a computer screen than say the exact same thing to a person face to face.

Don't be ashamed you did not know something, only a true idiot does not ASK any questions, you did however, you asked because you want to learn, that does not make you an idiot. I wish more young people, heck, adults asked instead of assumed.

About the movie, last night was the first time I saw it and I loved it for being a movie geared towards kids and tweens.

It was set in 1977 and it took me a bit to recognize the time period, as I was born in 1979 so really no recollection of bell bottoms lol.

The family is real and actually Piper's two brothers are actually older and has a sister in real life. Mahree in real life is named Carrie, can't find her last name and her dad was not a police officer but a government official. Carrie was also reported to be 17 or 18 when she went to stay with them.

Piper has been quoted as saying she believes Carrie was killed. I think though that was just a guess from her and the family as they've seen the evils of apartheid as well as Carrie not keeping in contact.
There is also another theory that her family convinced her to give up her anti-apartheid activism and beliefs as well as keeping in contact with the Dellums and just go back to her life. I kind of think the last theory, I don't think parents would kill their daughter because of what she learned in America being placed in a family she did not choose.

If you are interested in further learning about apartheid, another great movie is Sarafina, it was made in 1992.
