Wally or Waldo

What was he originally called Wally or Waldo? If so why was his name changed? It's not a another case of Little Women Part 2/Good Wives or Northern Lights/Golden Compass or Philosopher’s Stone / Sorcerer’s Stone.

Do they still make Where's Waldo (or should I say, Where's Wally) in the U.K.? I haven't seen any Where's Waldo stuff in the USA for years.

no, i think i read that there are no more books at least, after a failed attempt at a sunday newspaper comic strip a number of years back. there are probably some old toys being stocked in shops somewhere though

reply

You're wrong. There are still Where's Wally books around. There are some in WHSmith.

I feel like I've been lied to. That's like finding out Santa's real name is Gordon.

Why do they always change these things for America?

Big Gay Al, it has recently come to our attention that you are gay.

reply

Cause they believe America has a different taste in... taste

This is coming from an American, and I'd just like to put my 2 cents in. I grew up with these books/tv shows/etc, but I had no idea that he was in the UK first. I have no idea why people change things for America, but it might just be the same reason that when an artist does his own version of a song, he puts his own spin on it. Personally, I think it should be Waldo globally, that way the whole Odlaw thing makes sense.

reply

o_O i never thought of it that way... even if i never could

odlaw = waldo!!!

Like strawberries and cream
It's the only way to be =P

The animated version was largely a US production, so the title is Waldo.

If people have an issue with name change then check out how many name changes happened in other countries.
