Another 'why isn't it available on DVD yet' thread

Like presumably everyone that was privileged enough to see this upon it's first airing (BBC 2 / 1999) I'm scratching my head wondering why the BBC are sitting on it and seem so reluctant to release it on DVD.

Is there some sort of wrangling over royalties and rights? It was a co production between RTE and the BBC, if memory serves.

Is it a case of the two stations just not agreeing on something trivial and money related?

Can someone please shed some light on why it's still - nearly ten years on - unavailable on DVD ?

Also (although I can't find the thread on the eureka street board now) someone had taped all four episodes from the original 1999 airings and had offered to digitize and upload them for frustrated fans of the show.

Just wondering, did anything ever come of this?

In November 2005 I sent an e-mail to BBC Northern Ireland asking about its release on DVD. I promptly received the following response ...

"We were very proud of Donna Franceschild's adaptation and Adrian Shergold's direction, but the serialisation didn't pull in a big audience and the distributors felt that video/dvd would not be a good investment. Although there were not a large number of viewers, Eureka Street has remained a memorable programme for those, like you, who did catch it."

If you're keen to get this great show on DVD you may like to send them an e-mail too - try [email protected].

In the meantime we'll just have to content ourselves with re-reading Robert McLiam Wilson's wonderful book.

Have sent a e-mail :) I hope they change thier mind. Or consider releasing it electronically (so they wouldnt need to spend the money on making the dvd)

Hi,

I would be highly interested in getting these series on DVD. For years I've been trying to get me a copy of the show and no luck so far. I do have the soundtrack though, but I would love to finally be able to watch the series with my own eyes.
Look forward to hearing from you, or anyone who can provide me with a copy of the series on DVD or who can direct me to a seller.

Thanks so much in advance!

Me too! I’m delving into other BBC series. Great stuff.

And the book was sublime.

It has the greatest opening line ever:

All stories are love stories.

A worthy addition, zurichpoet, to the now popular pastime of crying, "Why isn't it avail..", etc. Well, you'll find it online as an AVI torrent file (http://btjunkie.org/torrent/Eureka-Street-1999-TVrip-Xvid/5202e28c9fee 20be38c992e028ed171b374e56cf49f7). I'll download it myself, and when I get my new DVD drive sorted out I'll burn copies for whoever can bung a blank DVD my way. Cheers.

Great show.

You're benevolent to the extreme podwilliams! Cheers, in thanks, to you too.

Kind words, zurich, but, oh dear, I may've spoken to soon. It's the one torrent site that won't let me 'back in'. Don't know why: I keep getting messages telling me that my forgotten password is on the way via e-mail, but it never arrives. Most torrents crop up at loads of different sites, but btjunkie/the box seem to have some exclusive gems all of their own. It's a bugger.

Rest assured, though. As soon as it's available to me it'll be free gifts all round. In the meantime, is there no-one else here who can get his or her hands on it?

Sounds like a plan to me! Have you read the book, and the author's other works? Very good. Supposedly he has a book due to his publisher from what I've learned. It was posted on Amazon.UK to pre-order for a bit then pulled off. It's something to look forward to, also!

reply

Interesting. I've not read the book, no - another one to add to my list.

Nice. You'll like it!

OK, It looks like I might be able to get it now. I got myself back into BTJunkie/The Box sites and 'Eureka Street''s still there for the sharing. Watch this space.

OK, it'll be arriving at my hard drive in the next hour or so: 4 avi files. If that suits anyone, let me know - you can bung me a blank DVD and I'll burn it for you. You might prefer to send a DVD-RW if you intend to convert the files to VOB files or whatever, leaving your DVD-RW free to wipe clean for other goodies.
