I wish they had used Roddenberry's original idea..

I wish they had gone with the original idea that this was the collapse of the Federation as in Star Trek. It would have been very interesting to see how they'd have done this series had they set it in the Star Trek universe as I think that was the original idea behind the fall of the commonwealth?

That wasn't the original idea. Actually, there were two original ideas:

IIRC the 'original' idea was a post quasi-apocalypse on Earth that had seen America Fall... and a hero lost in time wakes up and tries to reforge America

they likely went with Space in the First place Because of Gene's Legacy with Trek

as to putting it into the Trek-Verse... why cede that much control... sure it adds a degree of luster being part of the greater franchise... but then you are not only bound by previous decisions, but are left at the whims of the powers that be as to what you're allowed to do moving forward

- Voyager's last season overlapped with Andromeda's First... even IF they would have set the Andromeda Prologue at 5 years ahead of the Voyager/DS9 present and jumped ahead 300 years they're still boxing themselves into a corner... wasn't Next Gen some 200+ years post TOS despite only being 25 years later in the real world so what if the next 'Proper' Trek series would have needed to be 300 years in the future... but thanks to a shared Universe 300 years ahead is now 300 years after the Federation died?

actually ST:TNG was set 78 years ahead of Captain Kirk's era. not quite a hundred years. Picard's enterprise is from the 24th century and Kirk's enterprise is from the 23rd century.

from what i remember about Andromeda was that it was originally called Phoenix Rising but Sorbo only agreed to do the show if it was changed to Andromeda which actually was the name of another Roddenberry show that was "found" along with the other show ideas.

Varying degrees of info on the new "Roddenberry" series
by Glen Oliver

"Gene Roddenberry's Phoenix Rising" is being developed by Robert Hewitt Wolfe. - A Federation Starship... an 'Enterprise' from a bit further down the ship's lineage... is discovered drifting in space, it's Captain (and maybe a few crew) are frozen in stasis. Ship and crew are revived, and are horrified by the galaxy to which they awaken. Using their 'Enterprise' as an icon for the cohesion and strength that used to be, 'Enterprise' and her rag-tag crew set out to restore the Federation to what it once was, and restore peace and balance to the galaxy. <...> One significant question sticks out: this "galaxy in decay" notion would have worked magnificently on "Star Trek" - as viewers would already have a general frame of reference for what Trek history looks like and feels like. Thus, we can understand what has actually been lost, and are able to visualize what our heroes are trying to resurrect. But "Phoenix" does not have the benefit of dealing with such solid and established notions of what has come before, because its back history has never been seen or experienced by the audience. As such, one concern regarding "Phoenix" is that our heroes will be struggling towards a "new order" / "golden age" which has no resonance or point of association to the viewer. Thus, the "goal" of the series might seem tenuous or abstract. <...>

apparently the producers decided to not set the show in the star trek universe which was probably a good idea, although the idea is quite intriguing. If they went with the Phoenix Rising and had the story set in the Star Trek Universe, i think it would be better to set it farther in the future like a thousand years or more in the future. There was a similar idea that Bryan Singer had for a Star Trek tv show around 2005 that takes place far in the future and the Federation is in shambles, it still exists but it is in really bad shape. Sort of like a fall of Rome kind of plot. It sounded so interesting but they never pitched it to Paramount because Singer and his partners heard about JJ Abrams reboot and figured that Paramount wants to go that direction so they never bothered to pitch it to Paramount. you can find it on the web if you search Singer and star trek, i think it will come up.
