Searching for a good sci-fi space series…

I am looking for a good sci-fi space series. Can anybody help me? The problem is this; I have seen a few and only a few are interesting. I loved Babylon 5 (series 2,3 and 4). Farscape was alright but not special. Firefly nothing for me, Lexx had terrible acting and Star Trek is made for children. Lets face it, Star trek is aimed at 14 year olds: no swearing, no drinking, no drugs, no sex, no nudity , no controversies and all characters are almost flawless. In other words unrealistic and to me boring. A good series does not have to feature these things to be good, but to ignore them all together is turning it into a fairy tale and not a serious sci-fi series.

So please, can somebody tell me which sci-fi series is something for me?

Well, you pretty much covered all your major bases there with those series. You didn't name the Stargate SG-1 or Atlantis series though. You might want to look into those. Although if you're looking for extremes, probably not, cause the whole premise is it's run by the US military, so they don't really do the whole drinking and drugs thing. But they don't ignore it, either.

~I'm told you have something of a cling-on.~

I second stargate SG1 and Atlantis do yourself a favor and buy the season 1 boxset you will be hooked! Also check into battlestar galactica its storyline is absolutly amazing so are the special effects and actaing, again another serious you should buy the first season of( the first few episodes are slow however so just stick through it)

reply

Watch BSG and get shocked by the genius of the series

reply

I completly agree with you final the first season is somewhat slow but entertaining but after that words cant describe how amazing this sci fi series is i dont think i have ever seen such great acting on a sci fi show

reply

[regarding the newer BSG] The storyline of BSG was alright at first, but pretty much went to pot after the second season. The acting and the cinematography is what made BSG awesome, certainly not the storyline. It went from human inginuity, driven by a war, mythos and ethos to a supernaturally motivated about halfway through the series and that pretty much ruined the whole show for me, characters dying and coming back to life as Gods and other such nonsense. The ending was appalling in almost every sense, whether its the complete lack of scientific understanding regarding the irrelevance of mitochodrial eve, the decision to drive the ships into the sun effectively dooming a once rich and advanced society to repeat the same mistakes of their ancestors, or the inane supernatural elements forcing us to accept that people cannot change their destiny.

But yes, it was an excellently directed/acted show with great visuals and intriguing characters, its just ashame it went all hocus pocus in the end. Still definitely worth a viewing.

It's funny that you say star trek is aimed towards 14 year olds because it has no 'swearing, no drinking, no drugs, no sex, no nudity , no controversies' when it in fact has all of those things. you simply have to WATCH the show. And no, its not aimed towards kids. it's aimed at anyone who takes an interest in it's various political, social, and moral dilemmas. if you want entertainment that's about drugs, sex, and drinking, go watch american pie.

reply

I have watched the show(s) (ST) and no there is no real controversy. Moral (read PC) conflicts always result in a happy ending if the right choice is made. There are no real controversies. There are no political dilemmas as the right path is always clear and will have little repercussions. There is no nudity (remember: in an American show a kiss is more scarier than a kill. Just imagine some nudity; ooooh the horror.) no truly bad (evil/selfish) characters. And if there are any that come close than they are caricatures or have a soft heart beneath.

I do not want entertainment ABOUT drugs, sex, and drinking (I hate American pie). I want shows that do not treat these elements as non existent. How many wrongs have there been just because somebody wanted the "love" of a special woman? How many lives have been ruined by drugs and alcohol and what were the effects to the people around them? Such things can not be resolved in a single episode as is the case with Star Trek. I get the feeling you (Mkabbz) are a definite fan of the series. As such you value other elements in a series than I. I find Star Trek a fairy tale. But that is just a different perception...

As for Space above and beyond: Yes that is one that i liked. It had much possibilities but it never deliverd them as the show was cancelled too early. I forgot to mention that one.

Farscape is alright. Not very special but decent enough (in my view).

I completely agree with you. This is the same thing as for me, im searching that also. I also liked almost everything about Farscape but that childishly/brainless and "good and bad" things totally ruined the series that could be really special.

check out:
Space Above and Beyond, the pilot isn't great but the show had some really great themes from AI's to Aliens to invitro humans. It's short and old (early 90's) but it's still worth a rent from netflix. If you like Starship Troopers then you like SAB.

Invisible man, it's not a space sci-fi but it is still worth watching. Again this is a show from the late 90's that really got over looked. It lasted 2 seasons in which you follow a thief that is given a second chance when his brother invents a gland that can excrete quicksilver, turning anything invisible. The show had a pretty good story but was absolutely laugh out loud hilarious.

Also how could you not like farscape or firefly but love Babylon5?!?!?!?!?! Are you sure you like space sci-fi?

reply

little know cancelled series which was fantastic, pick up a cheap copy and enjoy.

reply

If you seek non-stop action against an implacable foe that constantly reinvents itself then look no farther than the Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles. Its user rating is 7.6 with median of 9. That's pretty high for a 3D animated series. The animation isn't that great but the action more than makes up for it. The action is set to the best, soul pounding music you'll ever hear.

Not a lot of nudity in Star Trek, but certainly plenty of sex implied. On the first series, Kirk is always climbing out of bed and dressing in the middle of the day, in the company of that episode's hottie. As far as themes, the first series was considered pretty advanced all around in its time. It addressed racism, the Cold War, totalitarianism, Nietzscheanism, etc. Perhaps you have to think a bit more to see these things there. Show had a person of color (green) as first officer, an African and an Asian in the bridge crew, seen as amazingly progressive at the time.

The second series often showed Riker canoodling; I recall one episode where he finds himself in bed with the wrong woman, to some consternation.

Drug addiction shows up often as a topic, and a couple of times in Andromeda as well.

If you actually want to look at bare skin, there are probably other shows and genres.

Two of the best sci-fi shows were short-run: Quark and Cleopatra 2525. The latter if skin is what you're seeking.

Interesting you didn't like "Firefly." I thought it was one of the best science-fiction shows made, yet it didn't last past 13 episodes.

"Firefly" has an extremely specific American texture. Perhaps because of this it might not make sense to Canadians -- that's where all the Tories got sent -- or to enough people outside the USA.

Another fun series is "Blake's Seven." And if you turn up Julie Christie's early "A for Andromeda," please let us know here.

I don't think being Canadian or what you would consider foreign means people don't understand "Western". And, lets face it, Firefly is a space Western.

Yes, the Wild West was American, and yes, in Canada our settlers didn't go around shooting each other (obvious exaggeration, but I'm talking about the Wild West here), but we still get the concept.

That's like saying you couldn't enjoy the movie Gladiator because you don't live in the Roman Empire.

I'm Canadian, and I think Firefly is one of the greatest shows out there. Hey, one of my favourite shows of all time is Brisco County Jr., for whatever that's worth.

I do understand what you mean by "American texture" and I totally agree, I just don't understand why that would make others unable to understand it.

Anyway, this cake is great. It's so delicious and moist.

you are not looking for a sci-fi series from the things you said above. Try Wrestlemania. Lots of action there! You will like it. When you start understanding the genre of Sci-Fi ask again. Bye!
