How did Red & Betty enlist ?

Red's stutter seemingly would disqualify him from being a pilot. Also how did Betty become a nurse? She can lie about her age but what about her nursing training?

How old is she? I never heard that mentioned (watching on AMC right).
Back in those days, women went to nursing school (a school just for nurses). There might have been programs that were only two years long.

There were. My mother went through one and served in the ETO.
