The casting sure feels weird now

Given actors' real life politics ...

Jon Voight as Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Alec Baldwin growling "We're going to Tokyo and we're gonna bomb it!"

They probably would have never taken those roles if the movie had been made just a few years later. The actors could still like, respectively, Roosevelt and Doolittle but they probably would fear viewers would get the wrong ideas about how they feel about current events.

reply

You're right. Good observation.

However, I don't think they would've declined if they were offered these roles years later. They are, after all, actors and if they like the part they should just go for it. Politics.....that shouldn't be the driving force.

Having said that, Voight should really think twice the next time he decides to talk about Trumpy. I like him as an actor, he's a freakin' living legend and by all accounts a very nice guy in real life, but he should just stop with his Trump support. He's too old and too smart to act like a typical blind, ignorant Trumpanzee.

Now who's politics are influencing movies?

In case you're not aware, this is the US, and people are allowed to have whatever political beliefs they want.

reply

They're actors. They can play whatever characters they want, not just ones who share their real-life ideological beliefs.

reply

Alec Baldwin relished the opportunity to play Trump on SNL and make him appear as ugly, stupid, and ridiculous as possible. There is no way IFH he would do that if Trump were a Democrat and aligned with his political ideology.

reply

I think you're right. Just in the last 10 years I feel like US Politics are so much more polarized, especially with the Hollywood crowd that is 95% ultra-right. Today a liberal would rarely play a Republican role unless it's to bash them.

reply

Did you mean Hollywood being 95% Ultra Left rather than Right?

reply

I did sorry. Sometimes my head is screwed on backwards, Jesus F.C ! Thank you Mustang.

reply

No worries just wanted to clarify what you may have meant.

reply

But it was also 1940s politics, something that was before our time, and firmly cemented in the history books, as opposed to say, if it were Alec being asked to play in a movie with a positive portrayal of Trump. That would never happen.

reply

Given the atrocities committed by Japan in WW2 and their Empire building notions it would be pretty difficult for a Left Winger to have an issue with fighting against Japan. Or in Alec's case playing a character who fought against Japan.

I am not very familiar with Baldwin asides from his Trump impressions which are fairly recent. However I wouldn't mind making the bet that when this film was made Alec was still middle of the road politically as at the time, Woke wasn't really a big thing. In other words Alec is just another actor jumping on a bandwagon.

reply

I agree. Leftist Hollywood and wokeism is more recent. Not that Hollywood hasn't always leaned left, but nowhere to the extent of the last 20 years, and getting worse by the year.

reply

Yeah they used to at least be a little clever about how they might throw Leftist propaganda into shows and movies. Now they just have characters blurt out political speeches and/or wear t shirts with slogans on them. Not to mention inserting races into cultural/historical settings where those races just wouldn't have existed. And of course non white actors playing historical roles where the person was white or just making someone like Snow White err not so white.

It's just boring as it has become very common and they seem to lose a lot of money following that course.
