Accents

I always assumed Canadians sounded similar to Americans but I was a bit surprised by the way almost everyone in this movie sounded slightly Irish. Is this how people normally talk in Nova Scotia?

It depends, accents vary across the country. Some Cape Bretoners, especially the older residents, have the thicker Irish/Scottish sounding accents. These days though the accent is a lot more vague. New Waterford Girl takes place in the Seventies and back then more Nova Scotians had the accents of the province than they do today. In places like Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia there's not much of an accent at all.
