reply

thanks so much, that's awesome.
too bad you can't come!!!

reply

all the good ones are in LA! you should come down here sometime!

reply

In Holland there are rave's every weekend, big commercial and small underground and in between.

reply

still around but nothing like back in 98-02. PLUR haha I remember I used to talk like that.

reply

I live in Denver, CO.

I used to be in the whole rave thing, but I hate them now.

I used to really like them when they were more underground, but now they are so goddamn commercial.

They charge you a lot of money for a rave in a *beep* venue where they pack as many people as they can.

I wouldnt mind too much if I were an X head, but I'm not.

The people who go to them are also part of the problem. They show up thinking that if they have their hair spiked up like everyone else and wear famous shirts, they can score a 15 year old raver chick. New people are welcome, but these people are trend whores who are pushing out the people who actually went to them for the experience. They just go for the oppertunity to feel up on a chick so plastered on substituted drugs that they wont mind some creepy spiky haired loner is touching her.

Its pathetic.

So now I rather just go to nightclubs. Everyone there is at least 18 years old.

But this is here, so raves in other places might actually be cool, but I'm pretty sure they're not.

reply

It's not really the same anymore. They're really just extensions of clubnights.96-2000 was definitely the golden age. I guess those days are gone now.

I live in Norway and used to go to legal parties/raves in the mid 90s. You would pay about 30-50$ to get in. You had to be 18 or 20 because of alcohol serving. Alot of different people showed up. Old hippies, young screaming girls, posers and average students. These kind of 'large' parties with 500-1000 people was something new and the DJs could play whatever they wanted. As long as there was a beat. You could hear deep trance, us vocal house, minimal techno, jungle, goa trance, progressive house, breakbeat and dub. It was brilliant and the mood of the parties was friendly. These days its hard to get people to show up at parties with underground music. They are still legal and they still happend and its much smaller and on a non profit basis. Fortunately the nightclubs is promoting underground music and parties by playing their music (rnb, new hiphop, hardstyle, commercial trance) and by trying to cash in as much as possible.. hehe

Bunch of youngin's here! You should have seen the scene in the early 90's b4 cops & most people even knew WTF a rave was. I prefer the mid-90's though. Right when it was evolving out of oldskool techno and cetain genres became defined at that point. When trance first starting getting big. Back when breakbeats were king and jungle was still for the 2nd room (and I don't have anything against jungle either) and hardccore/gabber was starting to take off.

Most of it is part though to the whole acid/xtc revolution (we need another!!!). Now a days, most of the scene is crappy minimal or wannabe electro house and filled with cokeheads and tweakers (yeah, i'm talking about you! I saw you wiping your nose off leaving the restroom!)

I've been doing it (even thrown a couple raves too) for almost 20 years now. The scene has changed. Everything HAS to have permits now. EVERYTHING! I live in California but a friend throwing a free rave in Vegas and got busted for not having a resale license for the $1 water. Weak sauce.

I've had nights to where at some 1 room raves, everyone got to know each other throughout the course of the night. And at the end, imagine hugging like 300+ peeps on the way out.......that's the way things used to be. When it was still underground and not being advertised on the radio & TV.

Events still happen outdoors in B.C. There's various well-organized and legal multiday festivals. And illegal bush parties, in locations ranging from dusty gravel pits barely off the highway, to magical river and lakeside spots... where your car may arrive splashed in mud and without a muffler due to the rocky washed-out logging road access. I'm not certain these are much different than the bush parties held in the pre-rave era. There's certainly plenty of alcohol consumed... I collected 333 bottles and cans after a party in 2008. Oh yeah, enormous furry pants and other stereotypical candyraver gear can still be occasionally spotted. And the Victoria Electronic Music Festival has become an annual summer event, though the outdoor beats don't last long after sundown. Still, it's cool to see confused tourists and ravers (and post-ravers) of all ages enjoying repetitive beats in the heart of the city.

heh Chad? Frodo

im in vegas. Our scene is was never BIG certainly not now, events happen, but PERMITS exactly like frodo said for everything, and teen dancehall laws pushed it to the bars and clubs more. Only one legal venue left in north las vegas.

The cali scene is still popping, but its just not the same anymore. It died for me in 2000-2002, all down hill from there, of course it could just be getting older.

I swore off massives finally last year at EDC, never again heh.

I live in Toronto and go to a rave about 2 or 3 times a month and they're always fun! I'm sure the 19+ ones are even better without so many of the super kandi kids, but they still add to the whole loving atmosphere.
I personally love them so much more than clubs because I never feel like the guys are there just to hook up with girls, it can happen obviously but people don't go and get molested like at clubs. plus everyone is happier, closer, and the music is better

Best one in toronto though is Darkrave which they hold on the first saturday of every month! come check it out, I hope I get to see you at one! :D

Hi, I'm from Ireland and I'm coming by myself to live in Toronto in a few months. I'd love to get into the rave scene there! I've only been to a couple here but the culture is not very strong and there tends to be a scumbag element to it in Ireland.
It would be cool if you could hook me up, gimme some info :P

I live in Reno NV OMG the raves here have gotten so gross. They are a bunch of little kids (as young as 11 and 12) all super messed up. The girls wear their bra and panties (I kid you not) as their outfit, and everyone dry humps and fingers each other on the dance floor. Gross.

Sometimes the difference between self-amusement and self-actualization is less than you think.

reply

yeah, imo raves were at its best from 96-02 (especially in las vegas). the rave scene is no longer what it was, and the new generation of ravers dont have the slightest clue on what raves are about in the first place. =(

reply

I think that's the way it is all over for the most part. I live here in Dallas and the parties were WAY better in every sense of the word from about that period of 96-02. They are a lot smaller now. Well they had their day, maybe a resurgence will happen. hmmm.

reply

Yeah if they ever started back up you would have to put a 25 and up age limit. I used to go down to New Orleans for some fun jams, Course the funky breaks in FL were a sweet time.

Like a few have said those days are long gone. Mostly with us it's just house parties now with everyone bringing over flight cases and making it a two day event. Least then we get to regulate who and what comes in the door.

I was a part of the St.Louis rave scene for a long time. Parties still do go on, but they are not the same as you see in Groove. Groove shows a rave scene that was completely underground in San Fran in the 90's. Since then, Raves have become more mainstream and have strayed away from the likes of parties back then. Drugs have played a major issue in this because the rave scene attracts people who just want to get high for a night. Its strayed away from the original purpose of bringing people together, no matter what the race, sexual preferance, or religion, to have fun being themselves and experiance the electronic music experiance. Groove is the perfect "Rave" scenario. However if you are looking for the Groove experiance...chances are, you'll never find it. You can go to these raves that are thrown now (Which you can find in any major city) and have fun. I'm not going to lie, if you take drugs, you are going to have a fantastic time..maybe even life changing....but that comes with a consequence. People become jaded, politics are introduced. It begins to feel like high school all over again. Maybe I am jaded...in fact I know I am. It makes me sad. The St. Louis scene is working to revive its rave scene, but I feel like its based on the wrong ideas. Money, drugs, self gain. It would be beautiful to find a scene like the movie...but it simply doesnt exist. atleast, I havent found it. If it does, I'd love to be a part of it. I do feel that if you want to experiance a rave....do it, go and have fun...be who you want to be....dress up if you want. Go to experiance something you have never seen before. I wont condone drug use...who am i to judge or tell you what to do or not to do. However, dont go expecting Groove.

like a few other people here, I used to be part of "the rave scene" back in the late 90s - early 00s. specifically, Madison, Milwaukee, and occasionally Chicago (as well as the rest of Wisconsin. Little Furthur, anyone?)

I'm with the people that say that today, "raves" are essentially nightclubs. It used to be underground, and even when they got bigger and more popular, there was still a feeling of... I don't know how to put it... a feeling that we were still part of something different?

Not trying to be all "oh, the old days were great and we knew what was going on," but kids today just don't know what's up. Maybe that's just something we start feeling when we grow up and see new people getting into things that we used to be into.

Anyway, I'm not trying to dissuade anyone from enjoying a rave or getting into rave culture. I'm just saying that things are different than they used to be. But they always are, aren't they? My bit of advice for new party kids - remember that it's supposed to be about the music, not the drugs. I think that ended up being the "downfall" - too much MDMA, not enough BEAT (yeah, lame attempt at a sort-of joke-like thing).

Summer of 94. I'm living in Ocean Beach, San Diego CA. I'm employed by SnakeBoard USA, and my weeks consist of smoking SoCal chronic till my blood turned green, going to Tijuana Mexico 2 nights a week for a $5 all you can drink til dawn fiasco, and the occasional underground 'party'.

We get the call from some neighbor birds that 'Narnia', a super massive, has been postponed yet again, and the promoters are throwing a free party in the desert. (look up Cuddleback Dry Lake) They say "It's just up the 15, to the 395 - look for people with funny hats, they'll give you the map to the glow-stick" I miss having to ge to map points, and silly coded questions. Getting there was truly half the fun.

When we finally arrive (3 hours after leaving San Diego) it's like something out of a movie that hasn't been written yet. There's a main stage that's no joke with it's back against an outcropping of rock. Off in the distance one can see DJ's spinning out of the backs of their cars out on the lakebed.

I did have a few 'party favors' that night, in the way of acid and E, with some nice Nitrous chasers, but it was the most magical rave I had ever seen. To this day, it sets the bar.

Miss that.

"You hungry? I haven't eaten since later this afternoon."

once or twice a year in scotland we get fantazia, lots of big rooms, angerfist was there last year

no one wanting to play with me so im taking my ball and going home

reply

Is this a serious question? Of course raves exist. Hell, I live in chicago and every single weekend there's a rave. Infact Party Monster is being held in Chicago once again in December and the real guys who started rave scene and who the movie is based on will be there as well.

If you're gonna rave you better be there for the music. It's fun to get geeked and go to a rave but now the rave scene is being taken over by underage druggies who just want to get fvcked up and make asses out of themselves.

reply

hah not sure why im on this movies board, but i watched it for the first time in 10 years almost, and figured i would snoop IMDB

notice some vegas kids on here. Our scene was blowing up in 99-2003 here, then just kind of died, it has come back then died again. Teen dance laws have pretty much closed every venue we used to have. Nobody risk desert parties anymore also, if they do i dont hear about this anymore.its all about the mega clubs on the strip now( dont get me wrong can be fun) and the bar scene. Drum/dub/elcetro house is doing very well in the bar scene, we have a handfull of events to choose from now, from SMASH monthly, tonedef starting back up, and several other nights, some fail, some are good times for the older jaded folk i suppose.

the scene has changed alot in Cali, i swore off massives for good after last years EDC. I did go to a small dnb party ( 3000 people is considered sort of small in LA) and it was pretty dope last year

nothing will ever touch such events as juju beats in the late 90s for me, or nocturnal 2000. And some of the smaller events at the orion and masterdome, always and adventure at those venues sometimes for the worst lol.

went to san fran once, it was sick.

plenty of parties. But the kids are just crazy now, but i suppose i might just be getting older who knows
