how much of what happend in this movie is really true?

What does "exagrating" mean?

From what I read in the book Shirley Jones wrote husband Marty Ingles, a lot of it is true.
She talks about her and Dave Madden taking it in turns to keep Danny from having to go home on the weekends because of his abusive dad. The extra makeup to cover the bruising on the face is true. She also wrote about the "go to your room" incident on the set.
