R.I.P. Widow Thayer

Actress Nan Martin who, for anyone that loves this film, will be remembered as Widow Thayer, passed away on March 4th. Others will remember her as Dotty Louder from The Drew Carey Show. Personally I enjoyed her performance in most anything I ever saw her in. It seems sad that very little (if anything) has been said about her passing (I didn't know about it until now - two and a half weeks after the fact), but truthfully she was never really known for any major big screen accomplishments. What many may not know however, is that she was a Tony nominated stage actress for more than 50 years, and was featured in Shakesperean productions in the 1960's. In later years, she played small but memorable roles in films like Shallow Hal and A Nightmare On Elm Street: Dream Warriors, had a standing role on the daytime drama Santa Barbara and has guest starred on many MANY sitcoms and primetime dramas since the 1960's. Whether or not you knew her name, chances are, you have seen her face. With such little exposure in recent years, it may be to only a few that she will truly be missed, but to so many, she will always be fondly remembered. She was 82.

I loved her in Big Eden and until your post hadn't realized everything else she'd done.

Thanks for your tribute and for posting this.

I loved her character and from the first time I saw this movie I had looked into her career and it was hard to find anything! So sad to read she passed (I had found out years ago) :( RIP

I loved her character in Big Eden and I admit I had never heard of her (I didn't watch Drew Carey) but I figured she was too good an actress to have just been plucked off the street. She will be missed.

She was in one of the last episodes of NYPD Blue. She plays a resident of a retirement coomunity where someone was murdered.

Turns out she murdered the other woman, a new resident, because she took away all her friends.
