Not overrated in the least, in my opinion. It's perfect, and Tony Leung is a friggin' acting god!

reply

I agree this movie is incredibly overrated.

What do feel is overrated about it? Can you name some faults?

i too didnt really appreciate this movie as much as others did, i must admit.

I heard alot about this film before I watched it and was really looking forward to it. I didnt see ITMFL and just watched 2046 tonight. I know that there are some people this film just hits and others that it doesnt, i must be the latter. It all just seemed hopeless as one character loved someone else, and the person they loved also loved someone else.

For me the film seemed like it really overcomplicated the main message of the film which was the inability to move on from love, rejection, obsession. I thought the romance in house of flying daggers, vanilla sky had a much more powerful grounding. 2046 although incredibly well acted was just too bizzare is really the best word i can describe it as, just bizzare.

I watched shudder island and the dream sequence in this film was beautiful where he dreams about his wife who died. Maybe i would have prefered 2046 more if it was more like a dream rather than through a story about an android on a train. dont know just didnt hit me.

I wanted to also add that i thought the whole message of the film was low and uninspiring. basically, get your heart broken then go live a worthless life and break other hearts so they can join you in the misery. also, that kiss at the end with the gambler lady and tony was just like watching a zombie film with them eating eachothers faces off, pure sleaze. Tony and Zhang's first meeting being through the fact that tony tried to get his friend to buy his way into bed with her just makes this film appear as a tale about sleaze rather than focusing on the beauty of love.

reply

You have it backward.

Tony's friend Ping wants Tony to arrange Ping's sleeping with Zhang Ziyi's character.

"Beauty of love"? There's more to love than feeling good, and "beauty".

Sounds like this one just isn't your cup of tea. I'll go ahead and reply to your post anyway since you took the time to tell me what you didn't like about it.

I'm surprised that you said the anti romantic qualities are what turned you off to it when you also said that you had been looking forward to seeing 2046. I suspect that you haven't seen the other films in the trilogy. All three have the anti romantic theme that Wong Kar Wai uses as a base to address the milieu of transplanted Hong Kongers. I think this is also why he chose the 1960s as the setting.

You said in the post below this one that it is focusing on the sleaze rather than genuine feelings of love. This is true. Leung's character has a general distrust of women that is a result of his relationship with his foster mother and lack of relationship with his biological mother. His biological mother gave him up at birth to a woman who made it clear to him that she doesn't love him or want him around. In 2046, Zhang's character asked him "do you treat all women like this?" and his reply is a bad joke: "not my mother." It's a bad joke because it was a cruel thing for him to say to her, and it's also far from the truth. He hates his mothers most of all.

So, Leung's character is a result of his environment. He never asks for pitty, though, and he is a bastard in both sense of the word.

I enjoy 2046 even just watching it on a scene-by-scene basis without analyzing the plot. It's beautiful. A romantic movie you may enjoy which is a bit more upbeat is Enchanted April if you haven't seen that one yet.

reply

1. It is NOT precisely a "trilogy".

2. It is not ANTI-romantic; it is the opposite.

3. Wong Kar-Wai's theme is ALIENATION, not "anti-romance".

It would be difficult to find a more romantic filmmaker.

but love is complicated. Why portray it as simple and digestable...

I thinks its the most basic natural emotion thats complicated by peoples ideals, while situations can cause a complexity to the individual i believe the film was by for more complicated than necessary which caused a part of its shortfall.

as the previous person picked up on, this film just wasnt for me, i know there are many that loved it but i just found it sad, uninspiring and filthy.

Just watched In The Mood For Love-film by this acclaimed director, it's clever movie, great Hong Kong cinema with fantastic photography. Then I popped this 2046 in and...

2046 was a letdown, hard to follow because it jumps from place to place, too moodful music score painting the background and that static voiceover makes this film great sleeping pill. Had to sit down three times to get this one through. Maybe melodrama with big M, but damn it's boring. Director is sort of genius, yes, so I recommend to check that Mood For Love film, Chungking Express was also interesting, more action-driven piece.

I agree: "2046" just doesn't have enough car chases and shootouts.

And it has no bombs going off. What's that about?

reply

Watch it again. (Clue: it isn't about an android on a train.)
