A bit of a late response (but hey, it's a bit of an inactive board), but even though I haven't played it, it really wouldn't surprise me. This game inspired lots of games with very similar controls and layouts. Blackthorne, Nosferatu, and egh... Lester the Unlikely. It was a very popular game, for the obvious reason that it was a very good game. Wolfenstein 3D, Zelda, Mario, and Space Invaders had the same thing happen.

It wouldn't suprise me, as Eidos haven't exactly been very secret about their inspiration for the Tomb Raider games.
