The ending? - Spoiler

I'm not certain about the ending...

After our girl learns that her lost lover is truly lost forever by his accidental death, we see scenes in B&W of her with the one guy she had been attracted to enough to sleep with - although it was only for one night, as he left quietly that night after their lovemaking while she was crying in the other room. We also see her getting in a car to the hospital in B&W. We see several of the characters she has met in the pursuit.

Was this letting us know..what? That he WAS the lost lover and that the episode portrayed earlier in the film with him was a memory of their time together, in the past, before her personal ad? I had this thought for a few seconds there.

Or was his letter to her, that he is writing at the end, letting us know that he is still interested in her, and now that she is free of the attachment to her lost lover, she can begin her life again by going to the hospital to work, meeting with him again, etc. I think that is the meaning of the ending, but I wonder what you thought...

Thank you for contributing to my inquiry...

He refers to her as Wu Chia-chen in his letter so he is obviously not her lost lover. It's just a simple letter asking to see her again. So after having some closure she can finally start a new relationship without always having her lost lover in mind.
