Favorite Scene?

mine was when Phil walks in with Sandra and he takes off his shoes revealing his tatoo...that was the best.

Yep, that one, and that scene where they finally reveal "Sandra, as... Sandra". Took my breath away!

reply

I love both of those ... but also afterward, when Sandra kisses Phil, his eyes flash for just a split second ... I love that!!!

My favourite was the bathtub scene. This movie was so bizarro, I mean... who thinks of two people sitting in an empty bathtub atop a hill? Hee. I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE Alan Rickman and I thought his accent was totally sexy in this movie.

reply

That whole scene in the way Rickman and Griffiths danced to the chair and then when he took his shoe off, YEA BABY. Alan Rickman has great feet, no I don't have a foot fetish or anything. He has such a languid way of moving, I adore watching him. It's weird because I saw him in Private Lives on Broadway and the whole second act he was barefoot and my cousin and I both thought #1-the man was made to wear black silk pajamas and #2-he has great feet.

The bathtub scene reminded me of Dharma & Greg, there was a scene in Dharma's parent's kitchen. It seemed the bathtub overflowed and left a water stain on the kitchen ceiling, the only problem was the house doesn't have a second floor. Their tub is on the roof.

See Achrya turning grossly pea-green with envy.
Drool, double and triple drool... !!!

But imagine walking barefoot on a splintery, drafty stage for a whole act! (A four- or five-minute dance number is quite enough, thank you.)
Ah, the glorious glamor of acting!

Bare footed Alan seems to be a favorite among many - I confess its one of mine too. Love the look he gives his arch nemesis.

reply

alan ruled every scene he was in lets face it!

my fave is when he is by him self drunk and suddenly looks in the mirror and starts pantomiming cutting hair. oh he was dead sexy in that scene

and another one was when ray finds out about his plant has been given to another stylist. the look Phil give him is like Gotya sweetheart!

reply

Lets face it, the Brits rule when it comes to good, snappy scripts, and this film is no exception!

Favourite scenes, in order of apperance:

1) When Phil asks Shelly why she didn't at least run off with another bloke and she tells him that he was the only man for her and always will be.

2) When Shelly's talking to Daisy at the hospital:

Daisy: I don't have many tomorrows,
Shelly: Incase you've forgotten, neither do I you selfish old bat!
Daisy: That's the spirit.

3) When they are sitting in the bath at the top of the hill, their conversation was really well done.

4) When Phil and Sandra do total look, and he takes off his shoes revealing the tatoo, Ray's face is classic in that scene to.

5) When Phil introduces Sandra as Sandra, she looked amazing.

reply

I agree. There are so many good scenes with Alan. I love Daisy. I wish I had known someone like her....so close to the end of her life and yet still so full of life. In every scene with Alan, his soul is in his eyes, and he would have to say very little. I love it when he steals the tag from Ray's "plant" and that smile when it is revealed is great!! The movie is really about people becoming a family, even with almost insurmountable odds. Josh did a great job and was a cute kid in the movie.
The look on Ray's face when he saw what his daughter had done to her hair in cutting it.......
So many great parts. Can you tell I love the movie? Just wish the extra language had been eliminated (modern language or now, it didn't change the story). But good story line.

I love the one when Phil and Sondra walk in for the total look.
I love the way Phil walked in with his arms swinging (but not in a gay-hairdresser-way *lol*). I liked them half-walking, half-dancing to the chair. Very...ellegant.
And I liked the scene when Sondra says maybe she has no elegance but she has a big foot (don't remember exactly if she said foot?) to kick them out.
And I liked Phil's grins...the nice ones as well as the nasty ones ;-D

I adore the entire Total Look scene... Alan is sooo sexy in that scene
I also like the one where Phil says "Never thought a son of mine would have flat bloody feet, you must get 'em from your mother." I was laughing at that one. The scene where Phil is drunk is also really good, he's so cute!

6 feet 1 with the voice so deep... Alan Rickman is completely unique

reply

Phil seems to have quite a bit of passive-aggressiveness. The comment about flat feet & also "learned my lesson there didn't I?", referring to Shelly cutting his hair when they were married, shows a lot of bitterness. But seeing as how Shelly & Sandra "upped & went", as Phil puts it, he has a right to air his anger, but he could've been more direct about it.

reply

I just saw it today for the first time and it was really good. Alan was great in it. My favourite scene is when Sanddra and Phil sits in the bathtub. it's a very beutiful scene.

reply

every scene i love has been well talked about by now. but the tatoo! i love it.

i also like when shelly and phil are talking and phil says something like 'i'm the only one that get near my hair these days'. i don't know why but this was very sad!

My MOST favorite scene was when Brian & Christina are prepping Uncle Barton's hair for viewing. They're talking about 2 different things, when Christina asks Brian "Doesn't this bother you?" Christina's talking about the whole concept of styling a corpse's hair. Brian's talking about how Uncle's Barton's hair could be "improved". HILARIOUS!!

reply

What I admire most about this film was how well it gave the ensemble cast something meaty to work with.

Here are my favorites [SPOILERS GALORE FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T SEEN BLOW DRY YET]:

1. When Shelley finally reveals to Phil and Brian that she has cancer by yanking off her wig. This scene is rich with heartbreaking irony! I especially liked Josh Hartnett's wordless reaction in the scene. Great acting by not overacting.

2. When Shelley walks in with Daisy for the Evening Look competition and wins it. Daisy's hairstyle was classic and classy next to the '80s New Wave hairstyles of everyone else.

3. When Sandra is the last to know about the cancer and kicks everyone out of the house.

4. When Brian sees that Christina has cut her hair. Their first kiss. (Boy, that Josh Hartnett really knows how to do kissing scenes! See The Virgin Suicides.)

5. When Phil and Sandra talk in the bathtub. Isn't it great how there's no explanation for the bathtub on top of the hill? We all just embrace this scene?

6. The opening scene with Ray Robertson. Hilarious! His over-the-top gesturing is hysterical.

7. The scene where Ray and his flunky are in the farmhouse and analyzing the man's haircut. You know, identifying his shampoo, how long since his last cut, who did his last cut. Love it!

8. The Total Look competition. No comment from me necessary.

reply

Best scene in the film? I'd say the part where Phil says: "Sandra ..... as Sandra"

Though what confuses me, didn't Shelly know what Phil and Sandra were working on 10 years ago? She seemed surprised when she saw the final result.

I hated Josh Hartnett's accent btw. Yuk.

reply

I don't think Shelly knew. It was a secret six months in the making. I suppose Sandra had to shave her head and get the tattoo, but no one had ever seen the "total look" before.

And, I have to agree about Josh Hartnett's accent. But I really admire his work so I'm going to shrug it off. Josh, stick to American roles only!

I'm suprised no one mentioned the Lord Mayor lip synching to Elvis at the end! LOL! That is SO funny!

My favorite part is the Total look competition part - specifically when Alan spins the scissors and smiles at Ray and says "like old time" or whatever

reply

We're living in a world where the audience is running out of the cinema during the end credits, and is switching off the DVD player after the last scene. The mayor would be reason enough to stay. Great idea.

My favorites are ALL scenes mentioned in these messages. And several others:
- Tony the Lord Mayor is hilarious! Remember when he first announces the Championship, and all journalists are sardonically sceptical? And when during the competition he tries to be a real showman, and changes his outfits like he is the main man in there? And when announcing the results he says "This tension is killing me" the most sceptical spectator replies "Well, something should!"
And what I love - is that further into the competition people of Keighley become less and less sceptical about "just hair". Well, why not, if their home team is competing!

And why nobody remembered about the colored sheep?!

To tell the truth, I wanted to watch this film because Alan Rickman was in it (didn't we all?... well, at least, most of us, I think). But I wasn't disappointed in every single scene! And I was relieved with the ending. Because with a story like that you would expect that it ends with a clichéd scene in a hospital, where the whole family is reunited over dying Shelly and all. But this... the ending is so simple and that's why it is so powerful.

And Alan Rickman is, of course, beyond competition. His Phil is strong even when he is miserable. (Remember his threatening "Don't push it, Ray!"?). No wonder, that Ray was so scared of him - because he knew, that even after so many years out of stream, Phil has more talent and passion and imagination, than Ray could ever even dream of having.
And my favourite - not even a scene, but a part of it, about a minute or so - when Phil finally swings into the arena for the Total Look! And when he starts to take off his shoes...! I knew: that was it! The Master is now unstoppable! I think, Ray had realised it too, in that very moment! I've watched that part over 30 times, and I'm not tired of it!
Very good movie, indeed. Touching and funny, without all those "below the belt" jokes that most of modern comedies are so full of. If you haven't seen it, do so! You won't regret.

Bathtub on the hill? No problem.

In a small town, in rural surroundings, I'd expect there to be places that are used as pastures for some part of the year. And they put out used bathtubs to water the animals.
The place where I live has a population of about 100 000, but a bathtub in a meadow, even on a hill, within walking distance of my house, wouldn't surprise me at all. I'd just keep an eye out for some friendly horses or a mean-tempered ram.

And a less pastoral explanation, some idiot couldn't be bothered to drive to the dump, so he just dumped his big piece of garbage someplace that didn't look like it belonged to anyone.

I loved this movie

"cant see it myself its only hair, isnt it?" (says the farm hand)

Nighy and his assistant look at him, look at each other, walk and stand over him... Nighys head twitches...

"only hair? You can tell alot from a mans hair"

"Oh, aye?"

"Oh, aye."

So funny those guys.

I love the scene when Richman opens the door to his shop and tells Hartnett "please be my guest. Its your choice lad" ALl families have their problems.

There are so many good scenes because its such a well told story, i could be here all day talking about scenes from Blow Dry.

Has anyone mentioned that priceless facial expression of Ray when he's passing Sandra with her half-done hair? I tend to imitate that when being in a ''yesssss!'' mood. *g*

yeah, that's a great one. I liked every scene with Ray, especially: you can sleep in the CAR!
the way he says it is very funny
and Rachel Griffiths' smile while the judges pass around is hilarious

reply

I at least smile at every clip with Billy Nighy in it--he's so expressive he cracs me up! I love it when Alan Rickman unexpectedly enters the final round (who looks freakin' sexy in his own right) and the way Bill Nighy looks over at him, but still works his moves on his model's hair. LOVE IT!

reply

The ending was pretty well put together, so I think that the total looks scene is definitely worth a mention. Alan Rickman's tattoo was pretty stylish, and Rachel Griffiths looked amazing as an imaginary, exotic bird, but I also liked the golden make-up and streaks in Bill Nighy's hair! You really don't expect Nighy to be able to pull that off, but I think that it suits him!

But there were other, smaller pieces of scenes that I enjoyed. Like I loved it when Shelly encounters Daisy in the hospital lobby and this conversation ensues;
Daisy: I don't have many tomorrows.
Shelly: In case you've forgotten, neither do I you selfish old bat!
Daisy: That's the spirit.

It sort of puts things into perspective.

I like it when Rachel Leigh Cook's character screams and runs away when she thinks that one of the dead men has come back to life.

I liked the very exotic looking, multicoloured sheep (although I've seen painted sheep before, but normally it's just a few stripes here and there for owner identification).

As caixaman mentioned, I also liked Rachel Griffith's exaggerated, cheesy grin, when the judges were reviewing her unfinished hair style.

I haven't read every one of these posts, but there seems to be something that no-one has mentioned.

It is not just the appearance of Sandra as "...Sandra" that is significant, but also Shelly's reaction.

Obviously, with all that preparation, the one thing that they hadn't come up with was a name for their design. Phil has to call it something, off the cuff. So it represents all that is beautiful in Sandra- an angel, a goddess, a rebel and a very very sexy woman. Shelly sees her partner transformed before her eyes into all these things, and she is absolutely overwhelmed by the beauty of what she sees. Natasha Richardson's acting is just perfect.

There are so many good parts. I like that funeral home scene, but my favorite part is the running gag of the mayor getting more and more extravagant with each successive day of competition.

Yes, I love the mayor too. Particularly his last scene in the empty town hall.
