"emotionally shallow Animal"?!

oh heck no,dogs are the best pets anyone can have. i cannot stand cats, i grew up with them,i was never a fan. they're vicious little things.

"when you yell at a dog his ears will go down and his tail will go between his legs" i'm pretty sure i'm paraphrasing, but it went something like that.ummm thats call obedience and my dog never do that. i never had the need to "yell" at my chow, a simple gesture at a well trained dog is enough and they simply just walk off from whatever it is they're forbidden from doing. Why would i want to work for a pet's affection, because i think he said something along those lines too.

A dog just loves you,he doesn't care what race, whats you're social status is, how much money you have.

i know a homeless guy on 23rd street in New York City,he has a yellow lab. i started petting him around the 3rd year of seeing them everyday on my way to work. i shared some cash and a meal from my favorite french restaurant with him, one holiday. He seriously and literally fed that dog before he took a bite himself. theyre worth that, you have a dog. you have a selfless, self-sacrificing, ultimate friendship for the rest of their lives. A cat is not that devoted. Anyway i know it's just a movie, but this is a debate i had with a friend awhile ago,and it strike a cord when De niro's character said these things.

I, too, grew up with cats. Guess what? They've always loved me, often more than the human members of my family; the only ones who were ever nasty were the ones who were born outdoors, never had any exposure to humans during their formative months, and turned feral as a result.

So the problem must have been with you, not with them. 

If this is a consular ship, where is the ambassador?

Very much so,no arguments there. They probably sensed my hesitation and my abhorrent for them, therefore that projected through....

I disagree. I have the exact same opinion as Jack. I hate dogs because they are way too helpless and are way too needy. I prefer cats because the ones I've had were very cool, independent, and yet very loving. They sensed when I needed loving and when I did not, dogs have no sense of this and are always seeking out approval and/or love. Cats seemed to me to be smart to know they could survive without me and I tend to respect that. Not so much with dogs, who are so very dependent on people, it's ridiculous to me.

I think your post actually proves his point.

For starters, I love both dogs and cats, and can appreciate the complexities of each.

A cat is an amazing animal, and make great companions, but it isn't automatic, like it is with a dog.

A dog will bond with you because that's what they do. It's how they're socially programmed. They have a hierarchy and if you're above them, you're automatically in charge. It's why they can make such great, loving pets and companions. But, as he said, they're emotionally shallow. It doesn't mean they're emotionally weak, just there isn't a lot of depth to it.

A cat, on the other hand, has no need for your companionship. So when they desire love and affection from you, it's because you've earned it. You've shown them that your love is something they want. But if you treat them with disdain, or even just ignoring them, they won't give a darn about you either. Your home will be a place where they simply dwell and get food. Their emotions have a lot of depth in that regard, and earning their affection is pretty darn cool.

Both my cat and my dog are two of my best friends, so I understand each pretty well.

Simple and well put. I do understand what kind of animal they are.Its a shame i was never able to bond with one.

I love both! It all depends on your lifestyle. Cats are more independent, and can be left alone longer than a dog. I had a dog for 15 years (had to put him down in December), and he was, at times, difficult. He loved to please when it pleased him. But most times he was loving, and when I was down, he was my support.
My sister has a cat, who is the most regal animal ever!LOL It is all a matter of lifestyle.

Also I just wanna add that when it comes to preferences, there really isn't anything to agree or disagree on. Sure, different things/animals/people have attributes that make one either like or dislike them, but on the other hand, sometimes if you already like someone or something, even some of their negative traits will seem endearing to you. And if you hate someone, it doesn't even take much wrongdoing on their part to make you snap; heck, even their breathing could get on your nerves. So it's a bit of a chicken-and-egg situation.
