Slow pace but overall a great film

I was a bit turned off by all of the LOOOOONNNGGG song sequences but other than that, I have no complaints about the film. I think the director could have cut those songs down a tad and that would have improved the pacing of the film but the acting was solid and Gulpilil was perfectly cast. I'm happy to see that he was finally given some recognition after YEARS of putting out good performances.

I found the documentary on David Gulpilil (one of the special features on the dvd) to be fascinating and had no idea that he still lived a traditional aboriginal lifestyle. I thought David would have been a wealthy man by now, living a fairly lavish lifestyle but he clearly would rather remain close to his roots. I think that says alot about his own character that he never allowed himself to become caught up in the life of a "movie star." It makes his performances over the years that much more believable because, in a sense, he is the characters he's portrayed.

I just love this guy.

Gulpilil is always amazing in every film i've seen him in! I liked the way in this film that they didn't rely on shock value when the men with the tracker killed the innocent people, they used the paintings instead.

Gulpilil was perfectly cast.

Gulpilil always has a noteable presence when on screen. I agree with you about the film's pacing. Fast pacing has never been Rolf de Heer's strong suit. By saying that I'm not implying major criticism, but there are times in most of his films, where you just feel they need a push to pick up the pace somewhat.

I like the film and its story and it is very well acted, but I found the constant substitution of paintings disruptive of general continuity.

Hard to believe how long David Gulpilil has been an integral part of Australian cinema. He was only 16 and had no acting experience when Nicolas Roeg decided to cast him as David in Walkabout, he was 18 by the time the film was released in the UK in 1971. Over the years he has appeared in 20 mostly Australian made movies and become a mainstay of Australian TV starring in about a dozen different series. A fantastic actor and an Aussie icon.

This means something, this is important.
