Great movie!

This movie was certainly under the radar. I found it from a recommendation from Netflix. I'm not much of a Norman Reedus fan but he was great in this movie. After I watched it, I watched boondock saints. My only gripe. Sutherland was great but i didn't like how his voice was sometimes gravely and sometimes normal. I just can't believe how there are almost no posts for this movie

I think the movie was aiming for "pretentious" but only got as far as "dumb as dirt". Almost everything that might have gone right with the movie went wrong: Kiefer is utterly horrible as William S. Burroughs, with (as you mention) a wavering vocal impersonation that - even when most "on" - is not evocative of Burrough's rich and ironic delivery. The characters have none of the energy that the "Beats" had, with a plodding and meandering narrative full of breathy (and artificially witty) little sequences between characters that leave a viewer wondering what could possibly have attracted anyone to such a dreary scene in the 50s. Not as bad as being kicked in the head by a talking mule, but not as good as watching paramecium under a microscope. Really terrible...

I'm watching it now and, though I don't think it's terrible, I do find it disappointing, annoying and inaccurate. Not Kiefer's best work, but the rest are adequate-going-on-good; and Courtney Love is surprisingly good! On the other hand, I just don't care for Norman Reedus as an actor - there's something very off-putting about him.
