Come on people. Stop falling for showy , over hyped pseudo romantic flicks.

A lonely , sad , lifeless woman who is desperately craving for attention starts getting involved in other people's miserable and depressing lives just to feel good about herself instead of doing something about her own. Eventually she ends up falling for a stranger , not cause they both like each other ( since they have never interacted directly cause she's too coy to even start a conversation like a normal person) but because of her solitude and the fact that he's apparently into her breasts.

Every character in this movie is lonely , sad and a stalking pervert. Even Amelie , the protagonist , who sits day dreaming about how many couples are having an orgasm at that exact moment.

It started out as mildly funny but lost it's way when the movie tried to encourage her negative behaviors like being overly shy and awkward , manipulative , unhinged and day dreamy , impractical , narcissistic , mean ( when she bullied the store owner till he called a mental asylum. An undeserved punishment for yelling at his slow and clumsy worker. ) ... She's just a truly obnoxious and unlikable character. She also hooked a pervert who stalks and harasses his ex daily with a sickly women. Her plan obviously backfired but no repercussion was directed towards her . Even her dad , who she bugs daily about traveling , didn't notice the stolen gnome pics at several travel destinations is the doings of his own daughter. Just how daft is he ???

A silly , pretentious , over rated , annoying , unrealistic and bland movie is what Amélie is. There's no meaningful plot to follow and it's just style over substance. I will give it a point for it's gorgeous scenes but other than that it was a fail.

The things that you seem to be pointing out as flaws were what made this film so good.

The loneliness of the characters was intentional. It focuses on people in society who don't fit in but would like to and are stuck on the fringes of existence struggling to participate. That's something that everyone identifies with at one time of their life or another. It's part of the human condition to want to connect, when we can't, we either shrink in on ourselves or project anger at the society we feel we don't belong to.

You should ask why this film makes you react so strongly. It could bring some insight on your inner self.
