Does Amelie have 9/11 to thank?

The last sentence: "While many films about terrorism were shelved around 9/11, a whimsical and sweet film like Amelie unexpectedly took off in the US and in many other countries [because] audiences wanted a joyful escape."

Personally, I think the film would have done just as well without the need for a escapist film. I loved it right away.

But then, I was already a Jeunet fan, so I'm not unbiased.
