And she falls for a guy who collects photos of random strangers and puts them all in a creepy stalker scrapbook....oh, and she sits around wondering how many people are currently having an orgasm.

These are not traits one would associate with a properly functioning human being.

So yeah, Amelie is mentally ill...which makes the film less "feel-good" and more "depressing and disturbing"

Nicely put.

I think the point of the film was she wasn't a normally functioning person, she was unable to start normal relationships. But she still had a loving heart and didn't end up sad and lonely wishing she had more. Instead she got the courage to go after what she wanted.

Her being pretty also helps not see her as a weirdo.

Bauer vs. Bourne, that is the question.

Wow, love the signature.

That is indeed an impossible question! Are we talking who would win in a one on one or which series/show is the best in terms of entertainment and overall quality?

Concerning the one on one, Bourne has youth and incredible fighting skills on his side, but Bauer has determination and mercilessness! So yeah, it could be a rare case of Apollo Creed/Rocky Balboa if you get the reference.

As for the entertainment value and overall thrill of both shows, after hard thinking i would go with 24... But it's unfair because there are so many twists, cliffhangers and revelations in 24 given the big amount of episodes it has per season whereas Bourne has "only" 3 movies.

So yeah, both shows are very dear to my heart so it's a really tough choice, but i'd go with 24 because it surprised me more, again and again.

so mentally ill people shouldn't get to have friends or love?

I am not sure why it would be depressing to you?
this girl who has had, in reality, a very hard life (her father never hugged her then her mother dies right in front of her leaving here in Paris all alone) yet she still strives to make others lives better. Even if she is mentally ill, as you say, i think it is a great story (heck that would make it even better! she is self sufficient and is pretty well adjusted)

Oh get over it. She wasn't a serious danger to herself or anyone else. Also there is nothing disturbing or depressing about her character or this film. All the most interesting people are at least a little bit crazy.

Of course she wasn't a danger to anyone else, her femininity and beauty wiped the evil away. She sucked the danger away like a vacuum cleaner. Now if she was a man on the other hand... Well, she'd be doing time, wink wink.

absolutely agree, Amelie is special. She dares to show vulnerability. Who does so nowadays? I see her as positive character, doing unusual things. She has a good heart, so she is totally okay with me.

You're ignoring something called "artistic/poetic licence" since this film is obviously a romantic fantasy, an extended glorious daydream of a shy, uncertain young woman eager for love, but afraid of taking the risks involved -- at first. I really hate this modern trend of instantly diagnosing anything even remotely outside the so-called norm as mental illness. As Zorba says in the final scene of "Zorba the Greek" -- "A man needs a little madness, or else he never dares cut the rope and be free." And as Amelie demonstrates, a woman needs a little madness as well. It amazes me that so many people today are terrified of stepping even an inch over the increasingly narrow boundaries of the status quo!

Yours is my favorite observation concerning Amelie. The film is a whimsical vehicle that portrays eccentricities in its setting that are benign. It's a fantasy/comedy/romance that I found to be quite entertaining. Had it been presented in animation (which leads to caricaturization) I doubt that so many would criticize Amelie's eccentricities. Her giving nature comes to the fore and eventually she breaks through her shyness to grasp and hold someone with whom she can trust and share her true nature. Excellent portrayal of a unique yet caring character.
