Are they doing drogueless tandums now?

Drogues were originally used in tandem jumps because the wind shadows result in 2 jumpers having the drag of one. Higher opening speeds w/ double loads were believed to be hard on canopies during opening. Also' the drogue helped stabilize the pair. Vic & Star didn't appear to be using drogues in this one. Has drogue use in tandums been discontinued?

There's only 1 Yogi Bear. They tried a 2nd time, & they made a Booboo!HeyeyeyhEY!

no, they still use drogue chutes. When I saw the movie I was wondering why they didn't have one. Probably so they could flip around more. But yes, drogues are still used.

Actually back in the old days (80's) the first few years of tandem jumping was done without drogues! It's really not a matter of opening shock, canopies can be designed to open at higher speeds, the drogues were used to slow down enough so the videographer could keep up.

I just watched the movie again, in the scene with star and vic doing a tandem, there is actually one scene where you can see part of the drogue bridle. The rest of it is drogueless though. With an experienced tandem passenger, stability shouldn't be an issue so as long as they deploy the drogue 2000 feet above the pull altitude, they should have slowed down enough for a soft opening.

Drogues are still used in tandem jumps. Their purpose is to slow the fallrate to that of normal terminal velocity (120mph) to not cause a hard opening. Without a drogue, tandem pairs would fall at around 180mph
