Surprisingly watchable

Not really a typical "action-cop-chase-goodguy-badguy" type movie. More about competition and obsession. Not a great movie, but its themes definitely make the movie quite enjoyable. If they had inserted the usual trite plots that plague action movies, it would have suffered. The parachute scenes are well done and the acting is adequate. Tom Berenger needed a little more to work with but did the best he could (one could probably blame studio editors for taking out character development). Turbo and Baldwin's partner are awful, but we don't see them much so not a big problem. Worth watching.

I deem this unwatchable. I cringed at least once in every scene.

Guy Manos did a remarkable job bringing skydiving onto the silver screen. Manos is a skydiver, not the typical Hollywood director, so you're going to miss a lot of the drama and character development Hollywood-financed movies can bring out. A lot of sacrifices were made to make this movie "palatable" to the typical "wuffo." For instance, the speed star competition, which is still competited at U.S. National Skydiving Championsships, consists of teams of 10, not 8, and the formations are different on each round. Already, that is too complicated for a typical movie-goer to digest so the simple 8-man speed-star competition was created by Manos to give the movie a center. Personally, I like the appeal of this movie for the intense drive and personal, life-changing conviction the sport of skydiving brings out.

I thought Baldin sucked and everyone else rocked, but it's worth it for the skydiving scenes alone. I'm a height-hating, plane-wary whuffo and will be making my first jump shortly. This film made me want to skydive!!!

reply

The story was a little weak and full of plot holes, but the jump scenes were authentic and made me want to get back up to 13,000 ft for some more jumps.

'Cutaway' has moments when Baldwin shows some acting skills. His depth of acting is minimal. I applauded his work in 'Posse' but in 'Cutaway' he hits a very flat note.
