Use of the cane

In some scenes Aleksandr Luzhin (John Turturro)used a cane. In other scenes he was w/out the cane. I am wondering if this was a mistake. When the driver takes Luzhin out and drops him off in the middle of nowhere we see Luzhin running around w/ his cane in hand. Then, in the same frame we see him w/out the cane. Then, again the cane. It is a round robbin to me. Cane or no cane?? HA HA

I noticed the sporadic use of the cane as well. In one early scene, Luzhin is leaving heavily upon the cane while walking. In several later scenes, Luzhin is absent-mindedly dancing with his cane. In yet another scene, he's scratching his back with his cane. I may be wrong, but I some real symbolism there. Halfway through the film, the cane for the most part disappeared. Natalia became Luzhin's source of strength, his dancing partner and someone to lean on.

Oh, BRAVO!!! You used this question that I had and made an excellent come back. BRAVO. This is exactly what my thoughts on the matter were. I just left them open to others' opinions. You have read my mind, per say. Good day. Tell me what you thought about his teacher. Do you think that Luzhin had finally forgotten his evil ways and then was once again reminded of him? This is another theory of mine. Agree/disagree?

The phallic imagery certainly did abound.

Name a few of those "phallic" images for Net. I would love to know what you thought was so phallic after all. Good day to you. Please respond soon.

I believe his cane was used as pure costume so he could fit in with the "classy rich" people. As you notice in the film, he tried to fit in by bowing and removing his hat. I believe the cane was just costume, it was very common of the time for those of the higher class to carry a cane for just looks.

If you've read the novel, you'll notice that after his final unfinished chess match with turati, Luzhin carelessly leaves both his cane and hat behind at the chess cafe, signifying that he has left his last bit of sanity behind him and that now he has gone completely insane.

Luzhin's fiancee later retrieves the cane from the cafe, (but she can't find the hat) which i suspect symbolizes the recovery of a bit of sanity on Luzhin's part after an acute feat of insanity thanks to his fiancee's careful and loving nursery. However, he can never be the same Luzhin he used to be (the loss of the hat could be interpreted as a trope indicating the loss of his cerebrum).

hmmmmmmm.........That is what I meant to say. Ha Ha. No, I really do see your point. I have yet to read it. The film has been my only insight. Thanks, and good day to you.

JOHN TURTURRO IS THE GREATEST ACTOR OF ALL TIME!!!!!!!

He mentioned rheumatism, which flares up. Some people think even the weather affects it. I think so myself.
