Why making movies that are blatantly sexist?

Ok! Genius man needs normal woman to be saved. Men and women need each other: men AND women need men AND women.

Extremist movies or point of views lead to extremism, be it religious or otherwise.

I couldn't agree more.
But I don't see any sexism in this film.
If anything, it's about LOVE (and yes, it is love between two members of opposite sexes).
Who else was going to save his "face", if not his wife?
(I am not saying that anyone absolutely should have tried to do it, anyway - personally, I see the ending as a little bit over the top - but if anyone did try it... who else if not his wife?)

Besides... are films supposed to be manifestos that present the world as it "should" be? ;)
(God, I hope I never live to see that day!
But with the general obsession with Po Co, that's where we're heading...)

I don't understand your point. This movie takes place many years ago when women were treated very differently than they were today. It's not sexist to portray sexism on film unless they're glorifying it. This movie was just showing us what happened, not saying that women should still be treated that way today.

Tomorrow's just your future yesterday!

I'd like to take this opportunity to point out that the director of this film is a lesbian. For whatever that's worth. ;-)

I only just heard about this movie because of this funny John Turturro interview excerpt

Why are you using today's point to view to judge something that occurred back then? You need help just like Luzhin did.

reply

Did you happen to think that maybe Luzhin 'saved' Natalia from a loveless life?

I am not sure I understand what you mean, or want to say. Do you?
