500 fights.

That really was a good monlouge, Diesel really put a lot into it, when he cares about the role he tries, same can be said for Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick.

Don't worry, I saw Lord of the Rings. I'm not going to end this 17 times.

what about the Fast & The Furious films?

A Man Apart was also a good one

Yeah the quarter mile monologue was good. and when he describes Letty in Fast and Furious.

yeah... it's a little to obvious that he put a lot into it and that's the problem. It was a bit out of place and ended up being rather silly...

First, If you're a tough guy, you don't tell people your a tough guy. It actually made Vin look less tough, like he was still trying to prove to himself that he was a tough guy.

Secondly, if you're tough guy and aim to monologue, you do so when your audience has no choice but to suffer through your speech because you already have 'em by the balls, they know you have them by the balls, but you just want make painfully clear how tight your grip is. This was not the case in this movie. They were just two guys, with no respect for each other, fix'n to get into a fight. There was no reason for the other dude to listen to the entire speech. If i was the guy standing opposite Vin fully aware that a fight was coming (as that hick had to be), I would have hit him well before he finished... likely as his arms were transitioning out of his sleeves. I would have been like: What the...? Who is this smuck? We're about to go to blows and this guy is pulls out a speech? Oh, look his arms are stuck in his sleeves." -POW! Right in the kisser.

Hick: "Five hundred what, douche bag?"
Vin: "Five hundred fights."
Hick: "...oh." POW! Right in the kisser proceeded by whatever is necessary to make sure Vin doesn't get up for while.
Hick: "Thanks for the monologue, idiot."

Conclusion: Descent monologue... just a bit inappropriate.

P.S.
...and where the heck were the hick's back up? It was four outsiders vs a whole bar. Those dudes probably wrestle cattle for fun. They could have taken on three softies from New York and a guy with five hundred fights and leathery skin. And how do you get into five hundred fights? I mean you don't just run into five hundred foos you pity. You really have to go around looking for trouble - like traveling out of town or something. Anyways - very disappointing show from the boys from Wibaux... very disappointing.

I think the monologue was appropriate...the guy had already lost before the punch was thrown. There is a difference in being the toughest guy in town and being tough. Yes maybe a "real" tough guy wouldn't have listened to his 500 hundred speech, but most guys just posture and want to do more talking than fighting. And i'm sure if he was the toughest guy in town and he was obviously very intimidated and then beat very badly, nobody else from the town was going to jump in.

Officer Collins: You see, a pimp's love is very different from that of a square.

It is easy to imagine how tough you are and how things would go down if you were in the movie.

Don't get me wrong, what you said is the logical thing to do in that situation.

Instinctively though, there should be an alert in your head going "DANGER DANGER DANGER".
Think about it, you're about to fight, he knows it and you know it. You're all tense up getting ready to punch while he's relax and nonchalantly pulls out a speech. That should be enough to make you think somethings up. You should be thinking "he's either a fool, bluffing, or I already lost and he knows it".

It is easy to fantasize being tough when in real life you're not.
In real life, if you were in that situation, you won't be doing what you said and get the first strike before he finishes his speech.
If you do, small chance he's bluffing, moderate chance he's a fool, and a huge chance that you're already done for. For example, he's got a gun or a weapon, or he's got backup that surrounded you already.

He was able to make the speech because when that hick saw his muscles and the look in his eyes, he was like a deer in headlights. He knew his friends were about to witness him get his ass kicked. Diesel's character knew he had him because he has experience with posers and also knew if that guy was the toughest, the resyt of the people wouldn't be a problem. It was the mind-phuk before the fight..

"when that hick saw his muscles and the look in his eyes, he was like a deer in headlights"

Exactly! He was intimidated right at the start of the speech. It made sense to me that he wouldn't want to throw the first blow out of a slim hope it wouldn't happen at all.

Seriously, to the confused people that are saying his 500 fight monologue made him seem less tough you should realize that after 500 fights a "Tough Guy" will get tired of having to beat the crap out of another idiot, there are too many bouncers(interesting since Vin Diesel was a bouncer) that have kicked too many guys asses and try to talk down trouble makers before they bounce them the hell out.

The monologue as you call it was not told to intimidate or make Taylor sound more tough or whatever, it was to educate an ignorant bully that next time he should be more careful with how he treats people.

I liked the speech but in reality it doesn't happen. I don't care where you're from you don't walk into a small town bar and attempt to take it over without a fight. However, it was one of my favorite scenes in this movie. Diesel shows confidence and the hick stands there and gets his but kicked.

Odds are pretty good that Taylor would've just ducked when Brucker took a swing at him while taking off his jacket. He never took his eyes off him, which shows experience. He was most likely ready for a cheapshot. Besides, Brucker was probably taking in the speech moreso than thinking about taking a shot at him. He was probably doing the math in his own head trying to determine how close HE was himself to 500 fights. It's possible he was thinking about the stereotypical NY kind of guy.
