I'm surprised that since this movie was made fairly recently it's not more commonly known!?! It's a wonderful movie with perfectly chosen actors that play there parts legendry (and of course cos Colin Firth's in it......need I say more). I have been trying to find this video everywhere yet it's like it doesn't exist. So if anyone gets a chance to see it, please share your thoughts; maybe ur fav character, fav scene, fav line... anything like that.
Yes! I just saw this movie very recently and absolutely loved it! I was kind of surprised since the reviews that I had heard were generally not overly positive.
I'm just getting up to speed on Colin's movies and have to say this movie rates as one of my favorites! His character was by far my favorite in the movie (although I thought they were all wonderful), and a definite change of pace for Colin!
Glad to see there's somebody else out there who loved the movie as well! :)
I'm a huge Colin Firth fan, and it was so fun to see him in a different role than he usually plays...I really liked this movie. In addition to CF's role, I really enjoyed Sophie Thompson's "Moxie."
This is a wonderful movie...it is so well cast and the writing is extremely witty. Like others have said before me on this thread, I watched it because I am a Colin Firth fan, and I think he was great in this role. I'd love to see him do others more like it! He pulled off his lines so well and I love the smirks he made when he was cheeky. Julie Andrews and Moxie were great too. I even thought William Baldwin was really good in it and normally the only Baldwin brother I really like in film is Alec. I really enjoyed this film and highly recommend it! Cheers to the good taste exhibited on this thread!
I've got Relative Values on video. I myself love it because I'm a huge Julie Andrews fan. One of my best friends really likes Colin Firth so this film is really great for both of us! It's the only film we can watch together with out either of us going "oh no, not somebody or other AGAIN!! Do we have to watch this!" Lovery film. Could have been longer! Anyone else think it could have been longer?
p.s arrrr notice I said loveRly!!! instead of lovEly! Too much My Fair Lady (Broadway-Julie!), gone to my head!!
I got my copy off of Amazon for the sole reason of Colin being in it. I loved it!
It was witty, clever, and funny (mostly due to Colin, of course)
Peter was my favorite character and I was almost rolling on the floor laughing when he kept trying to say "Here's lookin' at you kid." Although Julie Andrews was very good too....very schemeing.
Too bad more people haven't seen this movie. It's an undiscovered treasure.
I saw it on the "Love" channel last night and taped it. My neighbor storms into my place and says "ya gotta watch this!" and I did, and I'm very happy, too. LOVE British comedy - the Americans have quite a lot to learn.
GOSH! This camel grass juice is GREAT! BEWARE ALL STIMULANTS, ROBIN
Just saw this last night (got from the library). I liked it though there were several slow points to it. Sophie Thompson was just brilliant (liked her since Emma), and liked Edward Atterton (a hunk in Man in the Iron Mask).
But Colin...well he was so funny. I'm a HUGE fan of his (collecting his films, discussing him/his movies on websites, and have him on my computer desktop). He's the reason I sought out this movie in the first place.
Didn't like it enough though to add to my movie collection.
She shouts at her sister "You were born at Number 3 Station Road, Sidcup! And if you can hear Bow Bells from Sidcup then you've got the ears of an elk hound!"
Make it 15 - me and my mum love this movie! We always end up in fits of giggles when watching it, and it's great to see Colin Firth and Julie Andrews together!
Make that 16 that have heard of it. I got it as a burned DVD, and I haven't watched it yet. I just discovered that our other DVD player plays burned DVD's! I'm going to go watch it now, mainly because I'm a *HUGE* Julie Andrews fan.

This is on ITV as I type and annoyingly I've got to go out in a sec. I've never heard of it before even though it's got Julie Andrews, Colin Firth and Stephen Fry - 3 of my favourite people. Fortunately it is available on Play.com and because of its britishness I've put in an order.
Well, I've just finished watching it on ITV too, though I missed the beginning. An odd little film...its 'stage play' origins are evident with what seemed like slightly 'overacted' setpieces, while the rest of the cast stood woodenly in the background waiting for their cue!
Speaking of wooden, Colin Firth gave us his emotionless robot performance again...he is capable of so much more, but here, as in the 2 Bridget Jones films, again we get an unsmiling, 'uninterested' demeanour, that again wastes his talent. How they managed to get Steven Fry to reprise his 'Jeeves' but WITHOUT any of the 'sparkle' he has surprised me.
Julie Andrews simply played herself, & gave us none of the talent she has either.
Sophie Thompson projected & overacted herself right to the back of the auditorium, sadly...which of course went past the camera, & past me, sitting in front of my telly.
Baldwin played the 'between wars' (I assume that was when the play was written?)brash, conceited American to the hilt, & beyond....creating a totally obnoxious character who surprised me by getting the girl in the end.
Jean Tripplehorn showed about the most talent, which is quite damning really, considering the credentials of the rest of the cast. Her fiance (played by Edward Atterton?) was totally weightless & insubstantial, to the extent that Baldwin, despite the gross sterotype, probably DESERVED to get the girl, despite that surprising me in the end.
The Director, despite his array of Awards, let his cast down badly with this, sad to say.
...& I must add that I feel more than a bit awkward & uncomfortable seeing that everyone else here seemed to enjoy the film!
I can't remember why I added this to my Netflix queue, but it somehow made it to the top, so I decided to watch it, and I LOVED it!
There's a difference between movies where the characters are overacting because they're bad actors and a movie where the characters are overacting because they're bad "actors"! HA! The drama of the screen goddess and the charismatic leading man was hilarious. Very Elizabeth Taylor / Richard Burton! They didn't know where their film lives ended and their real lives began, so every "scene" was an act. Brilliant!
And the whole British aristocracy bit was played to utter perfection. I do like Colin Firth, and consider him very masculine, so I about fell out of my chair when I realized his character was gay. I just thought he was impervious to the film star worship that was happening to the staff until...well, I didn't see it coming until the "delicious" guy showed up! Wow. He was so cheeky and star-struck at that point that I couldn't stop giggling.
I also loved Sophie Thompson's portrayal of an actress' sister, who turned out to be a talented actress in her own right as she mirrored the behaviour of the aristocrat's she had been observing for the past twenty years. Her transformation into a tipsy heiress was charming.
It reminded me a little of a mini version of Gosford Park - without the murder of course...
Picked the dvd up in a charity shop yesterday cos it's chock full of fab Brit talent but in particular Stephen Fry (my fantasy big brother). Just finished watching it and enjoyed it very much.Sophie Thompson is brill - did she model her transformation on Hinge or Brackett? Love these sort of films - perfect for cold Sat. afternoons.
Does anyone know what's up with Colin Firth's character? is he suppose to like moxie or something, or look out for her? I only caught the last part of the movie.
Colin's character is gay; and he plays the part so well! He takes pleasure in making humour out of the disasterous situation that's unfolding - and enjoys it immensly. Whilst many of the other characters are start-struck at the arrival of Miranda Frayle, he manages to hold everything together until Don Lucas arrives, who he clearly likes, a lot!
I got up early (for me), one Sunday morning just to watch this film. Baldwin I was not so happy with, but other than that I loved it. Colin Firth can smirk better than any actor I've ever seen and he played his part perfect.
I just happened to catch this movie on the Hallmark channel. I also wondered why I had never heard of it, I just love British movies. Moxie definitely was a scene stealer. I loved when she chugged down the glass of wine and then looked around and said "Anymore?" Loved it!
I'm a huge Julie Andrews fan myself, so this film is a favorite of mine. I adore Colin Firth, too, so to see them play off each other and scheme so deliciously was great!
It's a fun, light British comedy. Noel Coward is always so witty!
Someone said it before - its a great rainy day movie!
