Breaking in ballet shoes

Ok, so I get what they do the shoes and why.

My question, and I've read this entire board, is WHY do they wait to do it right before class? You have people seeing, ripping out the inseam, burning them, etc... But why do this all right before class? Couldn't at least MOST of it been done previously?

Other than "it's a movie and they exaggerated the extent of what is done to the shoes before class to show the different methods", am I missing something here?

Note: I am not, nor have I ever been a dancer.

Breaking in shoes doesn't happen all at once. Or rather, I don't. Plus, I liked getting a feel before I broke in the shoe so it helps to do it in a place where you can get the right movement.

I knew female ballet dancers who bent the shanks of their pointe shoes, beat the shoes with a hammer, slammed a door on them, cut the satin off of the toes, slit the vamps, etc., etc. But they usually did it at home, not at the studio right before class.
