Why did this show not get picked up for more season ??

Why is it this series which got voted best new series only lasted one season?? They clearly had plenty more material to come up with and plenty more potential hilarity. We want more !?! The characters worked well together, it was well balanced out, and there was still plenty history to find out about each character, the mystery was still there. And, this is by far my favorite role played by Tony Shalhoub, complemented well by Neil Harris playing the unassertive editor. Network execs really ruin it for the rest of us .. How many other series have been "killed" either half way or at their start. This one being by far my favorite in that category.

The masses, read numbers, don't like the oddball series, especially those which require thought. My favorite comedy series are usually short run oddballs or those from the UK (which are dumbed down when they come across the pond). Look for The League of Gentlemen which was a 3 series x 6 ep black comedy about a quaint village in rural England, cowritten and acted by Mark Gatiss (Sherlock) at the beginning of his career. Also a Canadian show called Testees about two ne'er do wells who support themselves as guinea pigs for a pharmaceutical testing firm. Both are similar to South Park, where intellectuals dismiss them for the potty humor, but underneath they are brilliant analyses of the human condition. As an example, in Testees, they are given an erectile dysfunction pill that is so effective it draws so much blood to a certain part of the body that the person taking it faints. I treat it like Fawlty Towers, sure, we only got 13 episodes, but they were ALL perfect. I was in medical research for 30 years and they really got it right from both sides of the needle.

I think my percentage of Chimp DNA is higher than others. Cleaver Greene
