There's no comparison. Mimi is so much better and most of those terrible attempts at humor aren't there.

Can you please describe in full depth what Mimi's character was like in the original/subbed series? I've always heard that the dub butchered her character in the English version.
Also does the original version better explain why Mimi crying had made her crest of Purity glow and cause Togemon to digivolve into Lilymon?

I hope you get a chance to watch some of them. Its hard to explain how many changes in character were made, but some of the crests were changed in the dub, including Mimi and Jyou (Joe). And both of them were less whiny. The kids weren't the digidestined, they were the Chosen Children. The digimon didn't digivolve they evolved. (Shinka) Scenes were cut and characters died. That's just the start of it.

In the Japanese version her crest is purity which I don't think makes much sense...I think Sincerity is a better fit. But yes, I would like a more in-depth description as well.

Actually, I think purity quite suited Mimi. I was thinking about one example of how the American Mimi differed from the original. When Patamon evolved for the first time, the Japanese has her say he looks like an angel. The dub has her comment on his hair.

That's my problem...in the Japanese version you end up with a lot of the same crests...In the American version all the crests are distinguishable.

Only two crests were changed. Mimi's purity become sincerity, and Jyou's (Joe) honesty became Reliability.

Both are similar but have very distinct differences. Both represent a sense of "everlasting innocence" but the motivations and desired results behind them differ...
In Mimi's case, Purity is more practical. It's a measure of how unselfish and empathetic she is and thus, how she remains pure of ill-will. Remember the episode with the Gekomon? Mimi's totally and utterly selfish and thus her crest doesn't shine. It isn't until her battle with DarkTyrannomon and the thought that she may lose Togemon without her knowing that she loves her that let's Mimi realize that her selfish ways are holding her back from being the woman she needs to become. Thus, her shed tear is like and apology to not just Togemon but herself for what she had become up until that point. Remember that the crests represent what the Chosen Children were as children and do/should retain as they grow up. It wasn't hard for Taichi or Izumi to make their crests shine because they hadn't changed much from what they were as kids. It took Mimi's (and Jyou's) crest the longest to shine because she was so far removed her old ideals. But after, we see her embrace her sense of purity and become one of the most caring members of the group. After her crest shines, any instances of Mimi being "selfish" are really just products of her nativity, which in itself is a form of purity. You see this even more in Digimon Tri where she bring gifts for not just the other children but their Digimon.
Hikari's crest of light functions in a more holy, moral and endearing sense. Yes, she's empathetic and caring but it goes far beyond just that. While Mimi cares for those in her life, Hikari cares for literally everything, including what is unknown to her. She even cares for things that wish her and the world harm. While Mimi just wants everyone and everything to stop fighting, Hikari wants the wrongdoers to see the error of their ways and repent. Like Takeru, Hikari hopes for a better future. Other people (like Daisuke) and Digimon (the Numamon) see that special light about her and want to be a part of it too. People like Hikari are so rare and yet so necessary that when others realize that special trait about her, they practically worship it. In other words, Hikari's personality and mentality is so pure and endearing, it makes those who wouldn't normally think her way want to unconditionally.
This is why Hikari's crest is special and holy compared to others. Like Takeru, she possesses a virtue that everyone should have no matter what. Anyone can have courage, but they don't have to really. Anyone can have wisdom but that's needed, if you don't want it. Everyone can love but loving everyone isn't necessary. However, having hope is needed for all people and Digimon because it means carrying on no matter what. And, believing that light will always win over the darkness is necessary for that same reason. The other 6 Crests are all good virtues but not everyone can or even could have them. But Hope and Light? This is something that should exist in every living thing...

In Mimi's way, vanity doesn't necessarily mean "impure," so purity still makes sense.
While Mimi is constantly all about herself, after her crest shines, she begins being all about herself AND everyone else in her life. She cares greatly for herself but also wants the best for everyone around her. She becomes one of those "popular kids" who's loved not for her looks or personality alone but because she respects the looks and personalities of those around her and wants them to respect themselves as well. "Purity" in this sense means removed from ill-will. Once her crest shines, she becomes this.
I do agree that sincerity fits the dubbed Mimi and Yolei well though. They're written to be very blunt characters who love speaking their minds. While I feel a great deal of character development is lost when converting Purity to Sincerity, I get what the dubbed was going for.
