Book vs Movie

Saw the movie last night on HBO. I was struck by the changes made in the movie, particularly turning Adelaide into some sort of bohemian bimbo. I believe she wore a bikini in the book once, but ice cubes & nipples? C'mon. The discussions btwn Thomas & Adelaide in the book were very intellectual, and it bothered Jean on THAT level, not on a female-jealously level. But I suppose it would be easier just to show her breasts, huh. I also don't recall an actual incestous relationship btwn Maren & Evan in the book--rather Maren was in love with him, unrequited. By that point in the movie, I was expecting a full-on lesbian scene btwn Maren & Anethe (sp?)--thank God they didn't go that far with the pandering. I thought the book was excellent, very thought provoking. Thomas, in the book, was much more than a one-dimensional b*stard, as were all the characters. One side note: I was glad they left the child out of the story--I didn't understand, really, why the child had to die in the end. Or Thomas, really in the movie (didn't die in the book)--unless, I guess, they were going for the Hollywood comeuppance ending.....
