Question

I was a bit confused by this movie..i only watched it because i am a huge sean penn fan. Anyway a lot of it was confusing to me but i wanted to hear other opinions about some of my questions. First of all were sean penn and elizabeth hurley having an affair for a while, and did sean penn's wife sleep with his brother on the island. Also, did Jean push the other girl in the water on purpose? Another thing..why if the girl cconfessed that she murdered her sister and her sister in law did nothing happen to her and the other man still got hanged?

I read the book; have not seen the movie, so I'll relate the book storyline as best I can. SPOILER WARNING!!!! Sean P and E. Hurley never had an affair; she was a huge fan of his poetry and she adored the poet. That was all there was. The wife was a very confused woman, who did tried to seduced her husband's brother when they were in the island. However, it went nowhere, the brother was a decent guy, who admitted to having kinda of a crush on her once, but who was not going to pursued it at all. They returned to the boat and a storm developed much faster than anticipated. Elizabeth H. character is left to care for the little girl inside the lower compartment, even though she is absolutely terrified of the storm. At one point, the wife is left to hold on to the boat, Elizabeth H. comes up from the compartment to throw up. The wife calls her and when she turns the sail knocks her out of the boat. In the mess that follows in trying to rescue Elizabeth H. nobody realizes that the little girl had come up as well and gone overboard. She drowns.

The girl-murderer never confessed. She wrote it all in a letter that was mailed after her death. When the trial was over, her husband had sent her back to Norway because he did suspected her of the murders all along. The letter was mailed to him, who had since re-married and had children, but it never reached him. The letter was placed in a box with other documents from the time, but nobody ever paid attention to it until the wife discovered it in the box in the library. At the end of the book, she destroys the letter.

The book blew me away; I could not sleep the night I finished it.

so this is based on a true story?

one thing was they already hung the guy, by the time the woman confesses, so they decided to forget about it...

so i guess the movie guessed at what happened, or do they know somewhat?

Yes, it is based (the 1873 part) on a true crime. Although, the case has been debated the evidence does point to Louis Wagner as the true killer.

They mention in the movie that Maren wrote the letter three weeks before Louis Wagner was hanged. Then they show the prosecutor telling the man in his office that women get things confused and that they shouldn't second guess the jury who found him guilty. Then he puts the letter away in his desk.

RE: the question of the cross: Having read the prequel of sorts, The Last Time They Met, I can tell you that Thomas had given the cross to Linda as a gift. When I saw this movie, I wondered if Adaline hadn't somehow picked up on the significance of the cross necklace in one of the Magdalene poems, and decided to wear one because she's so in awe of Thomas and his work. Regardless, Jean was probably focused on it because it was another similarity between Adaline and Linda.
