Has anyone ever visited Smuttynose Island?

I read this book when it first came out, and I find myself thinking about it here and there every year. It wasn't the best read I've ever had, but the history on which it is based on has always unsettled me.

I've always wanted to see the island that this was based on, has anyone ever been there?

Can you imagine in the late 1800's living in those cramped quarters, drafty and dodgy in the peak of winter, especially with a man who you don't want and have come to be indifferent to? Then, add into, living with a horrendous sister that despises her, her brother arriving, who Mara's in love with, with his beautiful and fun loving wife---no wonder her sanity took an extended vacation from her mind.

You could just feel the claustrophobia jumping off the pages. I feel for Mara in the sense that she got robbed in life, leaving her bitter and jealous, angry and unhappy. Trapped on a dingy, cold, lifeless island. As a reader you can really feel her hopelessness, sadness.
