Who told Liz Hurley she can act?

Wretched film. Very annoying. I feel sorry for the actors depicting the scenes from the 19th century because they did a fine job. Polley is fantastic. On the other hand, every scene with L. Hurley looks like an audition for a 1970's porn video (which makes sense because her acting skills are about that calibre.) Here is liz sucking on ice, here is liz sucking on a crab leg, here is liz rubbing ice over her tits/ass, here is liz making bedroom eyes at Sean Penn.

Unfortunately she pulled her costars down to her wretched level because I could not sympathize with any of the characters in her scenes. I'm not sure if the contemporary scenes were just poorly written or poorly directed. Either way her "overacting" is nauseating.

I have no idea why Sean Penn did this film, he must have owed someone a favor. I imagine the book is much better than the film. Very bad acting, film lacks cohesion, don't waste your money on this one.

I totally agree. I was so furious with this movie. Yes, the actors in the scenes of the 19th century are all really good, but in the end that doesn`t matter at all cause its all pulled under by all the horrible stuff. When you are watching what is good (Polley), you can`t enjoy it in full, because you know that in a few minutes you`ll be back on the damn boat! It should have been possible to watch the two "stories" apart from each other on the dvd, it would be worth it and then some.

I agree 100%! The first bad Sean Penn film I've seen. Terrible screenplay and worse directing.

saw this movie last night.. I didn't get it. Josh was nice to look at though..

Liz Hurley can't act her way out of a paper bag. Jenna Jameson would have been a better choice for this part!!!

Now now....you can still have fun with this movie - as I stated in an earlier post, play the drinking game!!!

1. Take One drink whenever Liz Hurley puts something in her mouth in a sexually suggestive way.

2. Take Two drinks whenever incest or lesbianism is alluded to in the murder mystery from the past.

3. Take Three drinks whenever Sean Penn tries recite poetry......believably.

I agree, I HATED Elizabeth Hurley in this!!! that wasn't acting, it was "I got this job because I am beautiful and have a good body"........the sucking the ice scene was disgusting. this movie ruined the book, the book was great by the Great Anita Shreve, if you want to know the whole story, read the book.

reply

I have to disagree. I thought everyone in the film did a great job, including Liz Hurley.

reply

Ah, I see you have been playing my drinking game, eh?

reply

Haha, no. But she did a fabulous job at portraying the character of Adaline as defined by Kathryn Bigelow. The similar physical appearance of Liz H. and Kathryn Bigelow has often been mentioned. I think Bigelow was trying to make a comment about the way she is perceived in the media, etc.

Agreed, They ALL did a great job. The problem is, this being IMDb, if somebody (usually prudish americans) doesn't like a character they come here complaining that the person playing the character can't act. Look at all the comments here about Liz Hurley's bad acting, almost no comments at all about here actual acting but loads about how the character acted and what she (the character) did.

Another common theme is if somebody doesn't understand something about a film they keep shouting about plot holes, although are completely unable to name any when asked.

I wish there was a minimum IQ requirement for posting on any of the boards here.

Did you ever notice that people who believe in creationism look really un-evolved?

A male review of the movie...
I don't know about you guys, but I just caught this movie on IFC and I thought that Elizabeth Hurley was by far the most entertaining part. She should have gotten some kind of Oscar for the sucking-on-ice scene, it was the best scene in the whole dang movie! Lol.

Alright, alright, I guess the past parts were okay and watchable, but overall this was a very strange movie. But Elizabeth Hurley lounging around on deck was the most redeeming feature. =P

I thought all the sexy stuff was fun to watch, but I agree with the consensus in the thread that the historical scenes in the film were much better than the contemporary scenes. I think part of it for me was that not much happened in the contemporary scenes . . . I kept hoping they'd get off the boat and do something. There are far too many scenes of people reading, people reciting poetry, people sitting around and staring off into space or whatever, etc. at least for my tastes.

I agree, it was such a contrast... the historical parts were interesting and engaging, whereas the modern stuff was boring and poorly acted...
if you'd told me there were two different directors, I would have believed it

OMG, I can't agree more. Liz Hurley definitely out of her realm. Other actors all great. Yes, extremely nauseating. Sad thing is that I had to switch channels everytime she came on screen. This is my 3rd viewing since I did love the story and all other actors. That damn ice and crab legs! Someone needed to knock her veneers out and slap that fake smile off her face.

Sean Penn is always good. Sarah Polly and C. Hinds beyond awesome. I bet poor Jean from movie will never star with her again. Liz Hurley is disgusting. Why would anyone cast her? She grates on my last nerve. Shame on casting director.

Her acting matched the character perfectly. Sorry you didn't get it.

I think it's one of her best works: she portraits Adeline in a way the character oughts to be. All the actors in the movies are noteworthy, most of all Polley, Penn and McCormack. But through the years is Liz/Adeline the one I remember better!

Yuck@ Liz. I agree with the OP. No depth whatsoever..she should just stick to romantic comedies..or whatever the hell else she does.

"No..you're not stupid, I'm just smarter than you."

Maybe...but she sure is purty to look at.

Your assessment of Liz Hurley smacks of snobbery.

Just because a woman is overtly attractive and overtly sexual doesn't make her a bad actress.
