The closest music and songs (ballads or love songs) to that heard in Songcatcher appeared to me to be the music of the Civil War feature film, "Cold Mountain".

The haunting music and lyrics appear characteristic of those of an isolated people or those going through the most difficult of circumstances. Regardless, the final product sticks in our memory, long after we've heard them.

The Smithsonian has published a lot of "roots" music that catalogs some of this early American music and its evolution. Start with the "Anthology of American Folk Music" published by Smithsonian Folkways (Edited by Harry Smith).
