Where can one obtain a copy of this film?

OK, judging from the presence of two reviews written by Americans, I assume there must be some way to see this in the U.S. Amazon and ebay have nothing on it... Any suggestions?

Well there is a seller in the U.S. who you can buy a copy from. It's an Italian disc but with English subtitles. Nice print of the film. It's 4 x 3 which is the correct ratio as the film was made for Italian T.V.:

I have bought discs from this seller and there service has been outstanding.

Thanks, Precious-3 ... though it looks like I will have to get a Region 2 player first.

There is a R1 US DVD box set coming from Criterion this fall. It will contain this film, and Rossellini's films on Pascal and Descartes as well.

The only original DVD I found was Brazilian DVD released by a independent distributor called Versatil. Print quality is very good.
