Must for screenwriters

This is such a great underrated movie. If you are interested in writing a script, learn from one of the best, this is pure Mamet and now that I have enlisted in the Navy (although different from the merchant marines or longshoreman) it’s even better.

I write from an unusual perspective in that I have 3 university degrees and I come from a farm and have done plenty of construction work. I don't care much for bad language and neither does my Mary Ann. But I often tolerate it in the spirit of free speech and because as a former librarian and having served on the intellectual freedom committee (censorship issues)I am much against censorship.

But what got me on this film was that there was so much bad language and then when I read a comment by a guy here who worked on a lakeboat (as a Minnesotan I am proud of the story of the Edmund Fitzgerald) who says he never encountered language like that in the movie when he was a Merchant Mariner and since I did construction work and drove 18-wheeler and gravel truck at times in my life and I seldom encountered language like this - well, I may be an English major and I like character development as well as anybody but if the entire basis of this movie is built on a LIE, (the language) I say the bad language has absolutely no purpose in the development of this movie. I watched maybe 15 minutes of this movie and then looked it up on here (IMDB) to see what people said about it. The comment by a guy who worked on a lakeboat convinced me that this movie, whether it has good character development or not, is NOT going to tell me what it's like to work on a lakeboat. I like Peter Falk and all, but I don't need to hear bad language as if that is something that tells me the movie has higher quality or finer purpose or more realism than its basic theme.

This now confirms what I have suspected for some time. We are often exposed to bad language movie after movie not because it reflects realism, but because somebody, Producer or whoever, thinks he has to do it maybe to promote the movie. I grew up before bad language got nearly so far advanced and some of my favorite all time movies stand up well over time and many or most did not need bad language to make a point. So Mary Ann and I will continue to avoid movies with bad language because it serves no purpose except to shock younger viewers who think a movie has to have bad language to be authentic or something. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY NOT TRUE! I have walked out of theaters when the movie had bad language and now I KNOW I WAS RIGHT TO DO SO! I would probably have watched the rest of the movie had I not found out the basic fraud of the bad language. NOW I KNOW BETTER! Nuff said.

I think you're totally wrong about the "bad language" not being as pervasive in real life as it is in movies like this. This is the way common working men talk to each other and anyone who claims they haven't experienced that must be living in some strange place where people rarely curse.

Of course to each his own and if you don't like bad language then you should pay attention to the movie ratings and save your money. But personally I'd rather see an accurate depiction of reality than a version that has been sanitized so as not offend to those folks who are easily offended.

That said, I was kinda bored with most of this movie. The characters were colorful alright but not enough happened to them to keep my interest. It's not enough to have colorful characters unless you also put them into interesting situations.

Poorly written film, poorly casted, poorly acted. Enough said.

The characters were dull and uninteresting.

No, it really was a terrible movie. Call a negative opinion of something you like "trolling" all you want, but that doesn't change the fact that I thought it was a terrible movie. For someone who claims he isn't pretentious, you sure as hell come across that way when confronted with an opinion contrary to your own.

The characters WERE poorly scripted, poorly acted, unbelievable and overly crude. They make commercial seafarers look like a bunch of idiots. They had nothing funny nor interesting to say, and the overall atmosphere of the movie wasn't one that made the plot (or lack thereof) interesting or catchy.

The movie flopped for a good reason.

Your attempt at making my post look like trolling was written much like a troll. Try a rebuttal that makes you at least look semi intelligent. :-)
