Malcolm McDowell is a great actor, but wasn't right for this movie

McDowell's impersonation of the older gangster really killed it for me. I'm sure he'll forgive me for saying that.
But his character was sooooo different to what Paul Bettany portrayed, that it just wasn't believable. It was like watching 2 completely different people.

I think they should have either had someone else play the younger gangster, someone more akin to McDowell's style, or they should have just applied some old make up to Bettany for the later scenes.

McDowell was too florid as the older gangster in comparison to the contained venom of Bettany's young gangster. Apparently the film's producers didn't consider Bettany enough of a name to carry the film hence McDowell. I wish it had been Bettany all the way.

I'm not trying to break your heart,
I'm just trying hard not to fall apart

They let David Thewlis and Saffron Burrows play their older selves, and they didn't even bother with much makeup. Is Malcolm McDowell really such a box-office draw that they couldn't do the same with Bettany? The biggest distraction is that the older Gangster appeared to have shrunk about a foot in the intervening years.

That was quite bizarre IMO. Bettany was quite hypnotic in the part and then we find that Mc Dowell, who many realise is a much shorter actor, plays him, as the "modern No:1", in a relatively short number of scenes. Hard to believe it was for McDowell's "box office appeal", fine character actor that he is.🐭

I thought Malcolm McDowell was perfect for it, and that Paul Bettany was wrong for it. McDowell was extremely naturalistic in the role, believable as a jealous psychotic. While Bettany seemed like exactly what he was in real life, a young actor trying his hardest to look cool and doing his very best Goodfellas impersonation. The older generation of actors exuded a natural cool and toughness. There are few actors from the new generation who are able to naturally exude that same energy, and when they try it usually comes off as forced and transparent. The whole "look at me" scene in that guy's kitchen was painful to watch, Bettany was just trying so hard there.

Where they are going wrong I think is they are trying to be what they grew up watching. But that's not them, and when they ape those characters it comes off as extremely forced. The scenarios and actions of their characters are heavy enough, they don't need to ham it up. If they had the guts as actors to not try playing it cool and instead play it straight, they'd come off a lot more realistic and scary.

You hit the nail on the head for everyone, except Paul Bettany. I grew up in East London, and he reminded me of a few real characters I met.
