Homosexual or asexual

I wasn't sure if the character of the gangster was gay or just so selfish that he couldn't ever become close to anyone and therefore asexual.

The way he looked at Mays sometimes could be construed as either homosexuality or just a desire to have his wealth and status as a gangster.

Does anyone have any views on this?

reply

I really think it's the latter. He seems like a real sociopath to me. I think he was completely envious of Mays.

I'm with you on that one freddy2fan.

He wanted to be Mays, have the respect, credibility and style that Mays had.

Mays had charisma and charm.

Gangster was a definate sociopath.

reply

He wanted to have everything that Mayes had - but Mayes had the love of a woman, and the sociopath Gangster knew he could never have that, and he resented Karen immensely for that.

"You've got lovely eyes Dee-Dee, never noticed them before, are they real?"

reply

I never considered the gangster gay, he's definitely asexual but I also believe that not only was he envious of Freddy, he admired & in the only way he knew how, loved him but in a very sociopathic way, nothing homosexual at all. There are different kinds of love, romantic, familial, brotherly, etc but there are also different kind of obsessions, his obsession for Freddy may have looked in the surface like it was a sexual one but it was anything but. We often find same-sex fans of celebrities who may be borderline obsessed & in love with their idol but that doesn't necessarily mean they're sexually aroused by them.

I agree that the gangster finds Freddie arousing, sexual perhaps but not in a homosexual or heterosexual manner. What he liked about Freddie was the whole ideal of who he saw Freddie as, not as a man. If Freddie was a woman, it would've been the same.

Although there is that scene in the Club where they meet Karen for the first time when Freddie arranges for a couple of women to join them because "Two guys sitting alone drinking wine looks a bit suspect.."

Maybe Freddie thought that young Gangster's devotion/admiration of him was bordering on something stronger than just loyalty and wanted to make sure no one else thought they might be gay.

reply

I absolutely agree that Gangsters obsession with Freddie was largely due to envy as Freddie had everything he wanted: power, charisma, popularity etc. The director and several of the actors have spoken about Gangster desiring Karen which adds to his jealousy and resentment of Freddie so he was neither homosexual or asexual.

Personally, I think there were homosexual undertones put in for Gangster, but without the intent of making Gangster gay... per-se. Neither would I call him asexual; narcissistic definitely, but not asexual. See, he wasn't attracted to ANYTHHING in a romantic or sexual way. Power and fame attracted him, in an obsessive way. So rather I'd call him.... NON-sexual (LoL). But really, such a cruel and driven mind had no place for relationships; deep or shallow. He saw what he wanted, he went after it: he claimed it. He looked into Freddy's eyes with jealousy and a desire to take what he saw.

"They were all dead. And the walls of the stairwell dripped blood to prove it.."

Well, I don't know if he was IN FACT gay.

But remember there were some scenes in the movie where he gives the impression that he is:

- In the bar where they meet Karen, there are a couple of transvesties that pass by and Gangster looks at their bodies up-and-down instead of looking away immediately - he then looks away but the expression on his face clearly tells us that he doesn't look because he can't;

- In the scene where he kills Roland, remember that he starts touching his hair softly before Roland says "WTF?" at the guy?;

- He was CLEARLY envious of Karen, because she was stealing the attention of Freddie from him. Maybe that doesn't mean that Gangster wants Freddie to love him but at least he wants to make sure that he's proud of him;

Anyway, it's a bit hard to say, but I get the impression that he's a super repressed homosexual who only gets turned on by killing and hurting people.

Great movie, by the way.

When he's aged and finds Karen singing in the club he starts going on about how he wouldn't mind meeting a nice girl.

What made me think he could be gay other than his obsession with Freddie was the way he looked at the transvestites when they entered the club.

I think he was asexual. He was filled with envy for what Freddy Mays had and he looked to devour him, which could be seen as sexual but I thought it was much more primitive than that.

I got the impression he was an asexual homosexual. Adding to the points made, above, near the end of the film when he meets up with the older Karen she refers to him as a "ponce". As to the state of his mind I doubt he's technically a sociopath.... he's obviously insane. Different thing.
