2.Long good friday.
3.gangster no1
4.Mona Lisa.
5.Sexy beast.
Cant really think of any othes really. I dont rate any of that Guy Ritchie stuff, its ok when you first watch it but it get a bit boring. Plus hes some public school boy who tries to glamourise crime and gangsters.

reply

No one mentioned Layer Cake? Great flick.

reply

Well, I cant really add much to your guy's good lists, just my favorites in no particular order:

Get Carter (original, of course)
Long Good Friday
Lock Stock
Gangster No 1

Layer Cake gets some honorable mention, but was a little too much like that Empire movie with Jon Leguzamo, with the whole 'gangster trying to get out of the life but gets it in the end' gambit. I have Sexy Beast on my netflix, I keep hearing good things about it, especially from Chrissy Moltisanti.

There's probably a lot of others that I've never seen or heard of because Im an American, & there's always a lot of films released in other countries that you never get to really hear about. What an awesome genre.

Just my .02

Yeah, but Martin Scorcese and Francis Ford Coppola were also public school boys, but that doesn't mean that Goodfellas or The Godfather 1 & 2 suck.

well said

How about:

Villian

The Squeeze

The Sweeney II

...struggling to remember the name now but the movie about the great train robbery (not Buster).

^^^^^^ The Limey and I'll Sleep When Im Dead were going to be my additions to the conversation....

I don't know how offensive it would be to the British posters if I were to lump Ireland into the mix, but The General with Brendon Gleason and Jon Voight is one of my favorite underappreciated crime dramas. A Prayer For the Dying with Mickey Rourke and Bob Hoskins is also a decent IRA thriller/Brit gangster movie.

Isn't there a Jude Law one called Love, Honour and Obey...or something along those lines? I think I saw it and it was ok if not spectacular.....

......and Formula 51 was a pretty entertaining wannabe Guy Richie which happened to largely be set in England.....

T-wicks, You shouldn't worry about offending the British by lumping anIrish movie into the category. Worry more about the Irish reaction by calling an Irish movie British.
We know where you live......

Old Brit film 1969 "The Jokers" much fun but can't find it. Saw once 30 years ago.

The General is fantastic. It was first shown in U.S. as Black and White film.Have seen both versions. B&W was best. To bad director died so young.

Long Good Friday
The Limey
Layer Cake
The Krays
Lock,Stock & two smoking B
The General

I haven't trawled this entire thread, but my suggestions:

Performance (one of my all time faves)
Brighton Rock

reply

Do you mean Robbery, Peter Yates?

It ain't like it used to be. But it'll do.

reply

Are we getting confused here? In Britain, 'public' schools are private, ie fee-paying.

It ain't like it used to be. But it'll do.

reply

The Italian Job????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

reply

"Yeah, but Martin Scorcese and Francis Ford Coppola were also public school boys,"

Different meaning of "public school" - what is called a public school in England is called a prep school in the US. IIRC Scorsese and Coppola went to what in England would be called state schools.

reply

You know 'public school' in Britain and in America mean two different things, right?

Even though you guys list some very great movies. Many of you people forgot a great movie known as "Layer Cake". This movie went in and out theaters and went under the radar. I believe Layer Cake is one of the greatest British gangster movie ever.
