Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI?

Which one is better in your opinion and why?

Some say, both are best SNES RPGs and some even say that they are the best jRPGs ever made.

The same question is on the CT board.

both are amazing imo. (still playing them today) but i'd have to give the edge to Chrono trigger

I say FF3 but Chrono Trigger is an amazing game you can't go wrong with either.

The best games on the SNES, period. But if I had to choose which one was better, I'd probably go with FFVI. I liked the story and characters a little better (especially since there were so many characters!), but it's still a very tough contest.

FFVI. I didn't really find Chrono Trigger to be all that epic. It was fun at the time, though.

I tend to always think, while one of the best RPGs and games ever, that 6 gets way overrated by some, but i will admit there is a certain dramatic epicness about it that no FF until the 2000s seem to match (though the best of the 90s to me is still clearly ff7, probably the best period). I guess FF8 tried but then for some reason i couldn't play very far through it (FF7s a tough act to follow..) so i can't say for that one. It is possible that its because of the amount of time that supposedly passes in the game,(spoilers)(spoilers) and so many characters seem to go their own way (as opposed to mainly focusing on one story concept or idea as in FF7) and the fact that you see the world change so much, or play in "2" worlds.

But there is also a wonder and scope about chrono trigger that isn't matched, with its incredible mystique behind exploring such a plane through time traveling, despite its story or drama likely being hindered by the 'non-linear' storyline (i think non-linear gameplay is good, but i've always seen the idea of non-linear story being faulty, which was really just an offshoot idea of the many other next-gen innovations/ideas at the time). Chrono Cross though ok was a failure in this regard in trying to capture that; it didn't really feel like a CT sequel-- the way FF installments feel like FF, despite being in different worlds and "characters". Would be more awesome to see a real CT remake with a tweaked story, more than FF6.

Honestly between the 2 I can't decide, i played them so much on the SNES, and they both gave me such thrills too when desperately trying to defeat bosses i was stuck on/couldn't advance. There are others i would take over them though. Like FF4. I would take 4 over 6, but then again 4 vs CT is equally hard. So maybe that means CT wins?

Although Chrono Trigger is definitely up there as one of the best games of all time, Final Fantasy VI has more depth and is, as a notable games magazine journalist once said "is a hardback compared to Chrono Trigger's paperback."

I used to think Chrono Trigger. In fact, it was my favorite video game for a while, with Chrono Cross as a second. In fact, I think that I prefer the Chrono series to the FF series, less dilution.

However, after revisiting FFVI without having played it for years, I have to say that it does surpass CT. I don't necessarily play video games for their stories, but FFVI is complex and features nuances that attain a level that CT is incapable of reaching, without being a total bore like so many modern day so-called RPG masterpieces.

While modern games may possess more narrative "complexity"(literary allusions, purposeful obfuscation, etc.), I don't think many games weave so many themes so naturally and so seamlessly as FFVI.

It never entirely dwells on one specific issue. It never jumps at the chance to play the big narrative hand. It really does keep its reach both broad and limited, open and guarded. On one hand, it tries to say something on a lot of different things, but it never makes one any more important than the other.

As a story, it simply flows, and, in the end, creates a remarkably restrained and poetic picture.

VI. It's just bigger. I don't mean longer. I mean it feels like there is gravitas in every step. Chrono Trigger is great because I feel like I'm experiencing this wonderful adventure in this cool world. Final Fantasy VI feels like I'm walking in mythology or history.
