How do you erase and save files on this game?

I played SNES all throughout my childhood, and I still play it when I have the time. Somehow I never played this game until now. I had heard so many great things about FF over the years, and I heard that this game was the best one for SNES, so I finally decided to buy a used copy of the game through Amazon. I love it so far, but since it's a used game there are already 3 files on it. I can't figure out how to erase any of the files or save a new file. I therefore have to keep starting over. I try to save while playing the game but it won't let me. I only purchased the cartridge so I don't have a manual. If someone could help me that would be much appreciated.

Can you elaborate more on what happens when you try to save?

Your cartridge could be broken. My cartridge that I purchased for FFIV years ago wouldn't allow me to save the game for more than a few days. It would save, but after a while whatever I had saved would be gone. Luckily, I never really would go more than a day without playing the game until I beat it anyway. But the software on some cartridges becomes damaged somehow and the game won't save for long. However, in your particular case it's a bit unclear to me as to what exactly is going on. I may need you to describe it better.

My suggestion would be to download an emulator and the rom (or I could provide it for you). Then all you need is a generic USB controller to play it on your computer. Even better is the fact that you own the actual cartridge, so it's technically not illegal (not that I care; and neither does Nintendo since it's one of their ancient consoles no longer on the market).

You probably should have started with FFIV first though. I've always felt that FFVI should be played after IV. The latter is my favorite game, while the former is arguably the greatest game of all time.
