tries too hard to be stylistic

With the costume design, the acting and cliches and people all of a sudden having horns made of hair, it didnt seem compeling at all. Just pointless.

"Tries too hard to be stylistic..."?

It doesn't try, it succeeds mate.

How would you (OP) know what 'trying too hard' is? Do you know what levels of STYLE the director and creative team were aiming for? Who knows but them? THis 'trying too hard' thing of yours is completely arbitrary and really just a reflection of YOUR OWN tastes and sensibilities.

Don't blame the artist if you don't enjoy it.

I think the OP meant to say that he/she felt the style, or something about the movie, was contrived or forced. That is a matter of opinion, is it not?

I enjoyed this movie. The visuals were candy for the eyes.

I have the same question; thanks for asking it.

Unfortunately I don't think anyone has answered your question (except in very disrespectful ways).

I really enjoyed this film, but I still think we should be able to ask such questions without be attacked.

What is the value in a forum in which members are not free to carry on respectful discussions?

It doesn't try to be stylistic, it just is.

Boycott movies that involve real animal violence! (and their directors too)

reply

I agree that its stylistic and reflecting it very well

It clearly TRIES to be stylized. All films do. Some are just subtle about it. Some have less substance and are overpowered by their style. etc. I don't know what the OP means by tries too hard. I'm assuming you mean its got more style then substance, which is very obvious especially since at certain parts the style/designs are the point and not being used as a story telling technique to move the film along. Which I think is why this film didn't work for me. Too much of it seemed to work against the progress of the story and seemed to just be there because of how it looked visually alone. I think Hemingway said it best "Write your story, remove all your favorite parts. If it still works, you really got something."

I disagree. The "styling" of The Cell was extremely influential on pop culture for many years - even to this present day.

I just re-watched The Cell and, for me, it holds up very well (fast forwarded thru the kidnap drownings).

Watching an interview with the director and crew, they all explain how the director kept pushing for them to "go further"; "more, more".
I think director Singh go it right!

For me, all the surreal imagery was not "pointless" because ... we were taken into the mind - a dream-like dimension - of a psycho-path and a healer where anything is possible (including his sickest fantasies); a Matrix-like (1999) realm filled with layers of symbolism.

And of course this was crucial to the story, because we were trying to learn, not only the "why" of such criminals (from the researcher's point of view), but the location of his last victim - whom they believed might still be alive.

I dislike - very much - movies that depict women being terrorized / brutalized, but aside from that - I think this movie is very well crafted and I've added The Cell to my list of top 200 films.

We're still waiting for your movie script to go into production. Oh that's right...you're a dork. Please...the movie was perfectly fine and worth watching. If you're super picky about what you watch, get a girlfriend.
