"I believe...

...that people can go through ten times what he went through and still never hurt a fly."

This made me wonder about his back story, because the way he would know that, is because he or someone close to him must have been through something really awful, and come out of it still a decent person.

I personally know there are plenty of people that go through truly awful situations and are still so sweet, kind and gentle. It sometimes annoys me that films and TV rarely show that. They always use it as some backstory justification for why the antagonist is so cruel.

*** SPOILER ALERT***

Put down your phone, and pay attentionwhen you watch a movie. He had a viral infection in his brain since the day he was born. It laid dormant until a traumatic event triggered the schizophrenia. How much more backstory do you need?

I believe the OP wasn't talking about Carl Stargher but rather the conversation Catherine and Novak have about the man that molested a little girl and then killed her and put her heart in the freezer. That man did not have a viral infection. His lawyer used the "abused as a child" excuse to say he wasn't sane when he killed the little girl.

The way Novak phrased it made it seem that Novak himself might have been abused as a child and since he didn't grow up to kill he thought that excuse was BS.

You should really put the phone down when reading IMDb, you completely missed the OP's point by a mile.

Yes, I thought Vince Vaughn's character was going to admit that he had been abused as a child or something.

When Catherine is seducing Novak after he attempts to save her from Carl's control, she says something to the effect of "Did Daddy do a bad thing?" Maybe a storyline involving Novak's own abuse was planned but later abandoned. 

I am watching this right now and immediately thought the same thing about Vince Vaughn's character.
