Laughable plot hole

So Vince Vaughn needed to venture into the mind of the serial killer in order to realize that the logo on his torture device would be worth investigating?? Am I missing something here?

What's the Spanish for drunken bum?

Peter Novak (Vince Vaughn) went into Carl Stargher's (Vincent D'Onofrio) mind in order to bring back Catherine Deane (Jennifer Lopez) who became lost/trapped while trying to retrieve the information on the currents whereabouts of Stargher's soon to be latest victim.

reply

Yeah but going into his mind to save her had nothing to do with the case. Ultimately the dream thing didn't really help at all. They just investigated the torture device and found the victim...

reply

no actually the dream voyage or whatever did help. the image on the water tank in the dream triggered the memory of the logo he found in Starger's
basement and therefore prompted him to look for facilities owned by the company sporting that logo.

I think what the OP is getting at is that it was bad police work out of Vaughn and his crew to not investigate the logo in the first place. They had zero clues. Wouldn't the smartest thing to be to thoroughly search through the basement and follow up on any hints they could find?

It focused on one aspect of the story, but it also showed clearly that there was a team of people trying to find out whatever they could as quickly as possible.
They apprehended the serial killer only to have him go into a coma, with a very small window of time to save a victim.

People were simultaneously scouring the evidence for clues, but there could be hundreds or thousands of potentially significant stuff lying around, & only a few hours to find THE ONE that will save the victim in time.

People can follow leads for months or years & have them lead to dead ends. It wasn't a plot hole, but ironic that in the end it was right in front of them the whole time (but- as was pointed out- the symbol stood out from the others as significant BECAUSE of his experiences in the killer's mind).

He look, his phone has a "Sony" logo on it, let's go to Tokyo and crack the case! The police would have no idea if the BRAND of equipment used was of any significance. Novak seeing the logo in Stargher's mind tells him that the logo has significance to the killer, that he uses that company's equipment in the killing ritual and not just at his house.

Do you even rate, bro?

Exactly what Gordonator said, going into the mind of Stargher and seeing the same symbol was necessary to move the plot forward.

reply

i came here to post the same thing about the symbol, lazy cops didnt even dust the thing!

plus:

wouldnt they find legal records of his job closing the site down!?

j lo's character would never be able to alter the settings in the lab to switch the process

j lo's character decides to kill bad guy, not knowing if they needed him again, what if they didnt find girl!?

Exactly. Vince Vaughn going into the killer's mind was needed to save Jennifer Lopez, but it was unecessary regard to the police part.
If they discovered and investigated the symbol in the first place, they would have found the girl much sooner. Those policemen should change job.
So yes, it is a laughable plot hole, with the only purpose of making the movie longer and showing more visionary dream sequences.

Boycott movies that involve real animal violence! (and their directors too)

Was this thread created with a firm understanding of what a plot hole is?
Am *I* missing something here?

The police would eventually have investigated it, but they had a 40 hour window to try to find the girl. The basement alone was packed full of evidence and they had very little way of understanding which evidence was the most significant. A regular homicide scene takes half a day to process, a basement like Stargher's would take significantly longer.
