Can anyone explain to me the effects or after-effects of colonialism as seen in 'Beau Travail'? The only other Denis film I've seen is 'Chocolat' where it's made quite obvious, but to me they're not very clear here. Am I missing something really obvious?!

It's a big topic that's tough to really go into here on these boards, but I would recommend checking out Judith Mayne's book on Claire Denis in the Contemporary Film Directors series. The opening chapter examines at length the role of colonialism & post-colonialism in Denis's films, from Chocolat onward. Martine Beugnet's book on Denis is good too, in the French Film Directors series.
