Why did they fight?

I know this movie left a lot unsaid, but they're all eating, and then it cuts to them circling each other. Any insights? There was a lot of tension leading up to it, but the fight itself seemed to come out of left field.

Did it possibly happen after the "he deserted his post" scene?

"Weirdness was all he cared about. Weirdness and sex and plenty to drink."

It was probably mostly an image of the conflict between the two.

No. The circling happens earlier in the film.
