Galoup's Dance

Some think he kills himself and his dance symbolises his release from his drudge life, others see it as a dance celebrating life, but really it all boils down to the fact that that boy is funky! He busts a badass move. I'd probably put it down as the best dance sequence in film ever. Period.

Word.

At least I have cinema.

He had some great moves for a smoker!

I think the point was that he was all alone. After watching the girls and the soldiers dancing in groups the whole film, he was solo at the end.

"We all die alone"

great ending for sure :)

Love the ending...

i see it slightly differently because i read a gay subtext into the film, Galoup is a repressed homosexual, which is why he is so eager to impress his commandent, who he suspects is gay as well, which is the "rumours" that he heard about him, when a younger man who he secretly wants looks to be userping his place, such as when the commandent shows an interest in Sentain, asking about his family, and calling him a "nice find" etc, he kills him. the dance at the end, after ignoring all the inviting woman who danced before, he can only dance alone, he has killed the only man he really wanted, he has also been released from the legion and its monotony and de-personalisation, although it still exists in him, like in how he arranges the bed he will kill himself in, presumably, but in his head he is free, but more importantly, alone, he desperately wanted to free himself and his sexuality but couldnt deal with it coming to the surface in his desire for sentain
hope that made sense, kinda rambled, but thats how i see it, as a sad sad moment in this mans life

Interesting summary, cypher_191289. Along with the dance scene, I was thinking about the bed making scene. Both were examples of control, organization and expression.

With the bed, Galoup had to make sure everything was lined up and tight. At the same time he expressed himself with the bright colors and different patterns.

At the night club, Galoup didn't lose control of himself and join the crowd in dancing. He waited until everyone left before he could really let go with his freestyle dance. Even then, he had a couple of false starts before he really got down. Like he wasn't sure he wanted to give himself the privileged of relaxing and letting his true self come out.

Both Galoup and Commander Forestier seemed repressed. They had no problems with using their authority to oogle men all day using the cover of training or punishment. Galoup's favorite exercise was probably the one where the men surrounded him in a circle. The Commander preferred the moving rocks around one with the men's straining muscles.

No two persons ever watch the same movie.

Probably one of my favourite film endings! It was so weird, and i think it tainted my view of the film as a whole.

Just watched it again on YouTube, this dance sequence has always impressed me as a profound and insightful contrast for the character not to mention Denis Lavant's amazing moves. However, I'd forgotten just how amazing it is. What blew me away even more is after a little more searching I came across an interview with the director Claire Denis ( http://www.sensesofcinema.com/2009/50/claire-denis-interview/) who said that there was no rehearsal for the dance sequence and he did it in one take!!!!!! This makes it all the more a truly magnificent moment in cinema. Kudos Denis Lavant.

He has nothing on his life until he dies. I've read some reviews and they distinct the pointless of every action the group did during the movie. To me, it is one of the most anti-army movies i've ever watched. They were there because of "blood and sex", like Forestier said. Very good movie i think.

Just seen the dance. It was apparently meant to be screened before the suicide, but the director felt it had to end the film. It is an extraordinary sequence following the rythmic pumping of blood through an artery in his arm. Pure gold.

Nobody's perfect!
