Would a storyline have made it better?

Some people see anti-militarism
I don't - but an entire movie showing military training without even a hint of a mission, a battle, an enemy - the endless exercise does seem futile.

Some people see homo-eroticism - I don't. There is no passion, no flirtation, no loving embraces. And the guys do get on with the local black girls, some.
Can we depict nudity without eroticism? It is all in the eye of the beholder.

This movie is all about choregraphy! It is a series of ballet scenes.
This is a dance movie.
It is very beautifully executed, marvelous pictures, a feast for the eye.
I rate it highly.
But perhaps there should have been a storyline?

There was a storyline, but if you missed the blatant gayness, it's unsurprising that you missed the storyline also.

And the storyline was? A guy leaving the army?

Think about what I wrote about the supposed gayness

It helps a lot if you know the novel.

Ths story is the character of Galoup and his fall from grace as a commander in the French Foreign Legion as he recalls it. The subtext to his story regards his motivations for hating Sentain so much that he sought to destroy him. Because of the way the film is shot it is homoerotic and the implication would be that Galoup is attracted to Sentain whether consciously or not. Equally it could be that Galoup's desire for his superior officer make shim hate Sentain who he knows it the better man and, perhaps, better soldier.

I found the film very erotic because of the beauty of the movements and the beauty of the men. I describe the men as beautiful because thier bodies in motion set against the austere but dramatic landscape makes them like beautiful gods moving around and manipulating their environment.

Movement ends, intent continues;
Intent ends, spirit continues

Like I wrote - it is obviously all in the eye of the beholder!

All in the eye of the beholder, and I would say the eye of the camera. All those POV's of guys doing excercises without their shirts on, wrestling eachother etc, not a hint of homoeroticism there you think?
